Architect Salary Hong Kong 2027: Pay by Level & Registration

Architects in Hong Kong typically earn HK$43,000 to HK$53,000 a month, according to Jobsdb's November 2026 salary data from job ads. By level, the government's HK Talent Engage salary index puts assistant architects at HK$24,000 to HK$35,000, architects at HK$45,000 to HK$58,000 and senior architects at HK$55,000 to HK$80,000 a month. Government architects are paid more: the civil service Architect rank sits on Master Pay Scale points 32 to 44, worth HK$79,410 to HK$122,045 a month from 1 April 2026. Registration with the Architects Registration Board, which for most overseas architects means passing the HKIA Professional Assessment, is what moves you into the higher bands.

This guide breaks down pay by level and employer type, explains how overseas architects get registered and become Authorized Persons, and covers visas, tax and where the jobs are heading in 2027.

How Much Do Architects Earn in Hong Kong?

Pay depends heavily on two things: whether you're registered in Hong Kong, and whether you work for a private practice, a developer or the government. Here are the main benchmarks.

Jobsdb's figures come from salary ranges employers put in job ads, so they lean towards the middle of the market. Directors and partners at large practices earn well above these ranges, usually with profit share.

Does Location Matter?

A bit. Jobsdb's November 2026 data shows Central and Western roles averaging HK$55,000 a month, Wan Chai HK$50,250, and several other districts around HK$47,500. That mostly reflects where the big international practices and developers have their offices.

Architect Salary by Career Stage

Graduate and architectural assistant (0 to 3 years). HK$24,000 to HK$35,000 a month at the assistant level. You'll be producing drawings, models and submissions. This is the stage where you collect the Hong Kong experience you need for the Professional Assessment.

Registered Architect (3 to 8 years). HK$45,000 to HK$58,000. Registration is the single biggest jump in pay. Without it you can't sign off on submissions, which caps your value to a practice.

Senior architect and associate (8 to 15 years). HK$55,000 to HK$80,000. Associates with Authorized Person status, who can submit plans to the Buildings Department, are in short supply and can negotiate harder.

Director and partner. Pay varies widely and often includes profit share, so published ranges don't capture it well.

How Does Government Architect Pay Compare?

Government architects at the Architectural Services Department are paid on the civil service Master Pay Scale. According to CTgoodjobs' civil service grade guide, the Architect rank runs from MPS 32 to MPS 44, and Senior Architect from MPS 45 to MPS 49. The dollar amounts below come from the Civil Service Bureau's pay scale, which rose 2% from 1 April 2026.

Senior ArchitectMPS 45 to 49130,255 to 150,070

Government roles also come with housing benefits, medical cover and job security that private practices can't match. The catch: you need HKIA membership or equivalent, ARB registration, and the civil service language and Basic Law tests. Most of these posts are realistically open to permanent residents.

How Do Overseas Architects Register in Hong Kong?

You can work as an architect in Hong Kong without being registered, but you can't call yourself a Registered Architect or take legal responsibility for building submissions. For your career and pay, registration matters.

The Architects Registration Board (ARB) registers architects under the Architects Registration Ordinance (Cap. 408). According to HK Talent Engage, you need:

  1. HKIA membership, or a qualification the ARB accepts as equivalent.
  2. At least 1 year of relevant professional experience in Hong Kong before applying.
  3. Ordinary residence in Hong Kong.
  4. A written declaration of competence, and to be a fit and proper person.

For most overseas architects, the route to HKIA membership is the Professional Assessment.

The HKIA Professional Assessment

The HKIA and ARB run a joint Professional Assessment (PA). The HKIA's January 2026 eligibility rules say:

  • Degree: accepted if accredited or recognised by bodies such as NAAB (US), NBAA, AACA (Australia), NZRAB, the ARB in the UK, or under the Canberra Accord. Otherwise you go through an academic or portfolio assessment.
  • Experience: 12 months of practical experience to sit Papers 3 to 5, and 24 months to sit Papers 1, 2 and 6 to 8.

The HKIA's Professional Assessment eligibility page has the current rules and dates.

One recent change: the HKIA withdrew from the Commonwealth Association of Architects with effect from 20 October 2025, with a 2-year transition period. If your degree was recognised through that route, check your status.

The Route for Experienced Overseas Architects

If you're already registered abroad, the HKIA runs a separate Non-Local Architectural Professionals route. For the 2026 intake, it accepted registrations from bodies including the AACA, the UK ARB, NCARB or a US state board, a Canadian provincial body, NABAR and New Zealand's registration board.

  • Group A: 15 or more years of post-registration experience. Professional profile plus an interview.
  • Group B: 2 or more years of post-registration experience in Hong Kong. Papers 1 and 2, a profile and an interview.

The package fee was HK$15,000, of which HK$5,000 was non-refundable, and the application window ran from 1 to 31 October 2025. Successful candidates become HKIA members, which the HKIA says is readily accepted by the ARB for registration.

A Note for UK Graduates

The UK ARB and HKIA have a memorandum of understanding that covers recognition of bachelor's and master's level qualifications. It isn't registration reciprocity, so a UK Part 1 and Part 2 graduate still takes the HKIA Professional Assessment.

What Is an Authorized Person and Why Does It Pay More?

Private building works in Hong Kong need an Authorized Person (AP) to submit plans to the Building Authority. Registered Architects can apply to join the AP register with the Buildings Department.

According to the Buildings Department, you need at least 1 year of continuous relevant experience in Hong Kong within the 3 years before applying, followed by an interview with a Registration Committee. Results come in about 120 days, and registration lasts 5 years. The Buildings Department's registration guide sets out the process.

AP status makes you the person a developer or practice relies on for approvals. It's the main reason senior architects in Hong Kong reach the top of the HK$55,000 to HK$80,000 band and beyond.

Can Foreign Architects Get a Work Visa in Hong Kong?

Yes. Most overseas architects come on the General Employment Policy (GEP) visa, sponsored by the practice or developer that hires them. Our GEP visa guide covers requirements, fees and timelines.

Architects also feature on the Hong Kong Talent List. The Development and Construction segment includes "Architectural Professionals" and "Landscape Architectural Professionals", which can earn bonus points under the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme. See our guide to the Hong Kong Talent List for the full list and rules.

If you hold a degree from one of the world's top universities, the Top Talent Pass Scheme is another option that doesn't need a job offer first.

Is There Demand for Architects in Hong Kong in 2027?

The pipeline looks solid. In a Legislative Council reply on 8 July 2026, the Development Bureau cited Construction Industry Council forecasts of HK$305 billion to HK$360 billion in construction spending in 2030/31, including the Northern Metropolis, and said manpower demand would remain keen over the next 5 years.

HK Talent Engage also notes that capital works spending is set to rise from about HK$90 billion to HK$120 billion a year over the next five years. Public works, the Northern Metropolis and hospital projects are where much of the hiring will be.

How Much Tax Will an Architect Pay?

Hong Kong's salaries tax is low. Rates run from 2% to 17% on net chargeable income under progressive bands, capped by a standard rate of 15% on the first HK$5 million of net income, according to the Inland Revenue Department.

On HK$50,000 a month (HK$600,000 a year), a single person claiming the 2026/27 basic allowance of HK$145,000 and the maximum HK$18,000 MPF deduction would have net chargeable income of HK$437,000 and pay about HK$56,290 for the year, under 10% of salary. Our salaries tax guide walks through the calculation.

How to Get an Architecture Job in Hong Kong From Overseas

  1. Check your degree's recognition against the HKIA PA rules before you apply.
  2. Target large practices and developers that already sponsor visas and have English-speaking teams.
  3. Show BIM and local code knowledge. Hong Kong practices value Revit skills and familiarity with Buildings Department submissions.
  4. Plan your registration timeline. You'll need Hong Kong experience before the PA papers and ARB registration, so think in years, not months.
  5. Don't undersell Cantonese or Mandarin if you have it. It helps on site and with mainland clients, but most international practices work in English.
