Hong Kong Visa Status 2027: Check Online, Timelines & e-Visa
Kenji Farre, Director · Oct 27, 2026 · 7 min read

You check your Hong Kong visa status online through the GovHK "Enquiry of Application Status" service, or by calling the Immigration Department's 24-hour Application Status Enquiry Hotline on (852) 3160 8663, once the department has acknowledged receipt of your application. You need the Application Reference Number from your acknowledgement email. The Immigration Department says GEP, TTPS and training applications normally take four weeks, dependant applications six weeks, and IANG applications from recent graduates about two weeks, counted from when all documents and fees are in. Once approved, you pay online and download an e-Visa, which you can verify any time with your reference number and date of birth.
This guide is for people who have already applied for a work, talent, graduate or dependant visa and want to know where it stands. If you haven't applied yet, start with our Hong Kong work visa guide.
How Do I Check My Hong Kong Visa Status Online?
Use the official GovHK status enquiry with your Application Reference Number. That's the only online tracker the Immigration Department (ImmD) runs for visa and entry permit applications, and it covers the main routes expats use: GEP, TTPS, QMAS, IANG, training, dependants and extensions of stay.
Here's the process as it works today:
- Wait for the acknowledgement. When you submit online, ImmD emails an acknowledgement letter with your official Application Reference Number. The status enquiry only works after this acknowledgement, according to ImmD's GEP, TTPS and IANG pages.
- Open the enquiry page. Go to the GovHK Enquiry of Application Status page and choose the enquiry for your application type (new entry or extension of stay).
- Enter your details. Type in the Application Reference Number exactly as it appears in the acknowledgement email, plus the personal details the form asks for. Keep your passport and date of birth next to you.
- Read the result. The page shows the current stage of the application. If ImmD needs more documents, you'll also get a notification letter by email.
- Phone if the website won't play. The 24-hour Application Status Enquiry Hotline on (852) 3160 8663 gives the same status by phone.
Don't refresh this daily. ImmD's own training page asks applicants not to chase progress unless absolutely necessary, because enquiries can slow processing down.

Can I Check My Hong Kong Visa Status With My Passport Number?
Not on its own. Every ImmD online tool we checked is built around the Application Reference Number, not the passport number. The e-Visa enquiry, for example, asks for the reference number and the applicant's date of birth, and it won't show anything if those don't match ImmD's records.
So if you've lost the reference number, search your inbox for the acknowledgement email from ImmD first. It went to the contact email entered on the application form, which is often the HR team's or agent's address, not yours.
If you genuinely can't find it, call ImmD's Information and Liaison Section on (852) 2824 6111 with your full name, passport number, date of birth and the date you applied. Officers answer during office hours (8:45 am to 5:15 pm on weekdays, 9 am to 12 noon on Saturdays).
What Information Do You Need to Check Your Visa Status?
Have these ready before you open the page or call:
| Item | Where to find it | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Application Reference Number | Acknowledgement email from ImmD after online submission | Status enquiry, e-Visa enquiry, payment |
| Date of birth | Your passport | e-Visa enquiry and identity check |
| Passport (travel document) number | Your passport | Identity check when phoning ImmD |
| Temporary reference number | Email sent when you clicked "Save and Exit" | Resuming an unfinished form within 14 days only |
| Contact email on the form | The application form | Where every ImmD notice is sent |
Source: Immigration Department, 2026.
Don't confuse the temporary reference number with the real one. ImmD's electronic services page explains that "Save and Exit" emails you a temporary number so you can resume the form within 14 days. It isn't an application. If that's the only number you have, your application was never submitted.
How Long Does a Hong Kong Work Visa Take to Process?
Most work visas take about four weeks from the day ImmD has every document and fee it needs. The clock doesn't start at submission, it starts when the file is complete, so a missing document resets your expectations.
| Application type | Official processing time | Initial stay if approved |
|---|---|---|
| GEP (General Employment Policy) | Normally 4 weeks | Normally 36 months |
| TTPS (Top Talent Pass Scheme) | Normally 4 weeks | 36 months (Category A), 24 months (B and C) |
| IANG, recent graduates | About 2 weeks | Normally 24 months |
| IANG, non-recent graduates | About 4 weeks | Normally 24 months |
| Dependant visa | Normally 6 weeks | Linked to the sponsor's stay |
| Training visa | Normally 4 weeks | Up to 12 months |
| Extension of stay (routine cases) | Usually 2 to 3 weeks | Depends on the scheme |

IANG applications also slow down during the June to August graduation rush, according to ImmD's IANG page. For the detail on each route, see our guides to the GEP visa and the Top Talent Pass Scheme.
In practice, the four weeks is a floor, not a promise. In our experience, files with a newly set up employer, a role that looks junior for the salary, or a gap in the CV attract follow-up questions, and each round of supplementary documents adds time.
What Does Each Hong Kong Visa Status Mean?
ImmD's online application follows the same stages for every scheme, and the status enquiry and email notices will show you which one you're at. The exact wording on screen can vary by scheme, so read it alongside this table.
| Stage | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Acknowledged / received | ImmD has your application and has issued a reference number | Nothing. Status enquiries now work |
| Supplementary documents requested | A caseworker needs more evidence before going further | Upload them online quickly; the clock is paused until you do |
| Under processing | The file is complete and being assessed | Wait. Don't send repeat enquiries |
| Approved | ImmD has emailed a result notice with a payment link | Pay the issuance fee and download the e-Visa before the deadline |
| Refused | The application was not approved | Read the letter, fix the issue, and decide if a fresh application makes sense |

If ImmD sends a letter asking for supplementary documents on an application you made through GovHK, you can upload them online. Do it the same week. Most "my visa is stuck" stories we hear turn out to be a supplementary document request that went to the HR inbox and sat there.
What Happens After Your Visa Is Approved?
You pay, then you download. Since 28 December 2021, ImmD issues an e-Visa (a PDF notification slip) instead of the old sticker label in your passport.
- Open the result notice. The approval email contains a payment link and guidelines on paying for and collecting the e-Visa.
- Pay the issuance fee. You can pay by credit card (VISA, Mastercard, UnionPay or JCB), Payment by Phone Service, Faster Payment System, or certain Mainland e-wallets.
- Download the e-Visa. Save it on your phone and print a copy on A4 white paper.
- Watch the deadline. The result notice gives a time limit for collection. If it has passed, ImmD says to contact the section that processed your application.
Your fee depends on your route. The "specified schemes" are GEP, TTPS, QMAS, IANG, ASMTP, TechTAS and a few others. For those, ImmD charges a non-refundable HK$600 application fee on submission (since 11 am on 26 February 2025), then a visa issuance fee after approval.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application fee, specified schemes (paid on submission, non-refundable) | HK$600 |
| Issuance fee, specified schemes, stay over 180 days | HK$1,300 |
| Issuance fee, specified schemes, stay of 180 days or less | HK$600 |
| Issuance fee, other visas (for example training) | HK$330 |

How Do You Check an e-Visa Is Valid?
Use the GovHK e-Visa enquiry or the ImmD Mobile Application. Both pull the live record, so they're the right way to confirm what ImmD actually approved.
For your own e-Visa, the GovHK e-Visa Enquiry asks for two things: the Application Reference Number and your date of birth. It covers e-Visas issued on or after 28 December 2021.
Employers and HR teams can verify a candidate's e-Visa in three ways, according to ImmD:
- Scan the QR code on the e-Visa with the ImmD Mobile Application. Other camera apps won't read it, because the code is encrypted.
- Import the e-Visa file (PDF, JPEG, GIF or PNG) into the ImmD Mobile Application.
- Enter the e-Visa details in the app or on the GovHK website.
Lost your e-Visa? You don't need to reapply. A valid e-Visa can be re-downloaded or reprinted free through GovHK or the ImmD app.
How Do I Check My Permitted Limit of Stay in Hong Kong?
Your limit of stay is printed on whatever document admitted you most recently. Check the right one:
- e-Visa holders arriving for the first time: the "Notification Slip for Entry Visa/Permit" shows your conditions of stay. You scan its QR code at the immigration counter on arrival.
- After an extension or change of status: the "Notification Slip for Conditions of Stay" e-Visa shows your new limit.
- Using e-Channel: the gate prints a landing slip containing your conditions and limit of stay. ImmD tells you to keep it safely.
- Older sticker labels: labels issued before 28 December 2021 stay valid until the validity period or limit of stay printed on them.
Snap a photo of every landing slip; they're small, thermal-printed and easy to lose in a wallet.
Your limit of stay drives your extension deadline. IANG holders, for example, must apply within three months before the limit expires and at least six weeks before it, and must leave Hong Kong when it expires even if the extension is still pending, unless the Director of Immigration approves otherwise. Our visa extension guide covers the timing for every scheme.
What Should You Do If Your Visa Is Taking Too Long?
Wait until the official processing time has passed from the day your file was complete, then escalate in this order:
- Check your inbox and HR's inbox. Look for a supplementary documents request. This explains most delays.
- Run the online status enquiry. Confirm the reference number is recognised and see the current stage.
- Call the status hotline. The 24-hour Application Status Enquiry Hotline is (852) 3160 8663.
- Contact ImmD's Information and Liaison Section. Call (852) 2824 6111, fax (852) 2877 7711 or email enquiry@immd.gov.hk, quoting your reference number, full name and date of birth.
- Go in person if you must. The Information and Liaison Section is on the Upper Ground Floor, Administration Tower, Immigration Headquarters, 61 Po Yap Road, Tseung Kwan O. Counter hours are 8:45 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 11:30 am on Saturdays, closed Sundays and public holidays.
For technical problems submitting, paying or downloading, the e-Services hotline run by ImmD's contractor is (852) 3128 8668, 7 am to 11 pm daily. They can't tell you anything about your case, only fix the website.
One email with all your details beats three phone calls. And if your employer or agent filed the application, ask them to make the enquiry, since the contact email and authorised person on the form are theirs.
Common Problems When Checking Hong Kong Visa Status
These are the issues we see most often from candidates and hiring managers.
- The reference number isn't recognised. You've probably entered the temporary "Save and Exit" number, mistyped a character, or are using the extension enquiry for a new entry application (or the other way round).
- The employer or agent applied for you. All ImmD notices go to the contact email on the form. If that's HR's address, you won't see the acknowledgement, the supplementary documents request or the result notice unless they forward it.
- The status hasn't changed for weeks. Processing only starts when ImmD has every document and any fee due. Check whether a request for more documents is outstanding.
- You applied before 26 February 2025 and paid nothing upfront. That's expected. Applications submitted before 11 am that day are charged under the old fee structure, even if approved later.
- The e-Visa payment deadline passed. Contact the section that processed your application. Don't submit a fresh application.
- You're switching employers mid-process. A new job means a new sponsor, which is a separate application. Read our guide to changing jobs on a Hong Kong work visa before you resign.
- Your family's applications are moving at different speeds. Dependant applications take six weeks against four for most work visas, so the main applicant is often approved first. Our dependant visa guide explains how the two link up.
Avoid paid "visa status check" sites. They can't see ImmD's records; they just send you to the same free GovHK page.
FAQs: Hong Kong Visa Status
How do I check my Hong Kong visa application status?
Use the GovHK Enquiry of Application Status service with the Application Reference Number from ImmD's acknowledgement email. You can also call the 24-hour Application Status Enquiry Hotline on (852) 3160 8663. Both only work after ImmD has acknowledged receipt of your application.
Can I check my Hong Kong visa status with my passport number?
Not online. ImmD's tools are built around the Application Reference Number, and the e-Visa enquiry asks for that number plus your date of birth. If you've lost the reference number, call ImmD on (852) 2824 6111 with your passport details.
How long does a Hong Kong employment visa take?
ImmD says GEP and TTPS applications normally take four weeks once all documents and the application fee are received. Missing documents or follow-up questions add time. Routine extensions of stay are usually finalised in two to three weeks.
Where do I find my Hong Kong visa application reference number?
It's in the acknowledgement letter ImmD emails after you submit online. It goes to the contact email on the form, so check with your employer or agent if they filled it in. A number from "Save and Exit" is a temporary draft number, not an application reference.
How do I know if my Hong Kong visa has been approved?
ImmD emails a result notice to the contact email on your application. If approved, it contains a link to pay the issuance fee and collect your e-Visa. The online status enquiry will also show the result.
How do I download my Hong Kong e-Visa?
Pay the issuance fee through the link in your result notice, then download or print the e-Visa yourself. If you lose it later, you can re-download a valid e-Visa free through GovHK or the ImmD Mobile Application.
How can an employer verify a Hong Kong e-Visa?
Scan the e-Visa's encrypted QR code with the ImmD Mobile Application, import the e-Visa file into the app, or enter the e-Visa details in the app or on GovHK. Ordinary camera apps can't read the QR code.
How do I check how long I can stay in Hong Kong?
Look at your latest e-Visa notification slip or the landing slip printed when you arrived through e-Channel. Both show your conditions and limit of stay. Keep a photo of each landing slip in case you lose the paper copy.
Can I work while my Hong Kong visa is still processing?
No. You need an approved visa or entry permit before you start work in Hong Kong. Visitors can't take up employment, paid or unpaid, while they wait.
What if my Hong Kong visa is refused?
Read the refusal letter for the reason, then fix the underlying problem before reapplying, for example a stronger job description or missing qualifications. For specified schemes, the HK$600 application fee isn't refunded whatever the result.
