Marketing directors earn HK$70,000 to HK$100,000 a month (median HK$80,000), while marketing executives sit around HK$21,000 a month on Jobsdb's salary data. Below: pay by level, specialism and sector, take-home pay, bonuses, skills, languages, visas and negotiation. For how marketing compares with the wider workforce, see our breakdown of the average salary in Hong Kong.

How Much Does a Marketing Manager Earn in Hong Kong?

The honest range for a permanent marketing manager is HK$40,000 to HK$65,000 a month. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide puts the median at HK$55,000, which works out at HK$660,000 a year before any double pay or bonus.

Other sources come in lower. Jobsdb's career advice pages show a typical marketing manager salary of HK$37,000 a month, and PayScale reports an average base of HK$464,551 a year (about HK$38,700 a month) from 106 self-reported profiles, last updated in December 2025.

Why the gap? Recruiter guides reflect the MNC and regional roles they place, while Jobsdb and PayScale include SMEs where "marketing manager" can mean a team of one. Benchmark multinationals against Morgan McKinley and small local firms against Jobsdb.

Morgan McKinley names digital marketing managers, performance marketing specialists and CRM professionals among the most in-demand marketing roles for 2026. If you have run paid media budgets with clear return on spend, you are in the strongest negotiating position in Hong Kong marketing right now.

Brand manager salary in Hong Kong

Brand managers are the one area where sources disagree in your favour. Morgan McKinley's permanent median is HK$40,000, but Jobsdb puts the typical brand manager at HK$48,000, and Morgan McKinley's contract data shows brand managers at up to HK$78,400.

Our view: classic FMCG brand management roles at large MNCs pay well, but Morgan McKinley notes that digital and data-driven roles are now in higher demand than traditional brand roles. Brand managers who can show commercial results and digital fluency get the upper end.

Product marketing manager salary in Hong Kong

Product marketing managers earn HK$35,000 to HK$45,000 permanent (median HK$40,000) on Morgan McKinley's figures, but contract roles pay a median of HK$52,250 and up to HK$78,400. Jobsdb's typical figure is HK$42,500.

Luxury, retail, financial services and tech

None of the guides we fetched publishes a marketing salary split by sector, so we won't invent one. Here is what they do show.

  • Financial services: Investor relations managers, typically in listed companies and finance, earn HK$40,000 to HK$70,000 on Morgan McKinley's figures.
  • Fintech and tech: Morgan McKinley says competition for mid-level performers is strongest in fintech, FMCG and cybersecurity.
  • Retail and luxury: eCommerce and CRM managers (median HK$55,000 and HK$58,000) are the roles retail and luxury groups are hiring for.

Take-Home Pay: What You Keep After Tax and MPF

Hong Kong's tax is low, so you keep most of your salary. On HK$55,000 a month, a single person pays about HK$66,490 in salaries tax for the year, an effective rate of around 10%.

We calculated these using the IRD's progressive rates (2% on the first HK$50,000 of net chargeable income, then 6%, 10%, 14% and 17% on the remainder), the 2026/27 basic allowance of HK$145,000 announced in the IRD's 2026/27 Budget measures page, and the MPF employee contribution of HK$1,500 a month (5% capped at HK$30,000 of income, per the MPFA). We assume a single person, 12 months' salary, no other deductions, and the HK$18,000 MPF tax deduction.

Tax is paid annually in arrears, not deducted monthly, so put money aside from day one. If you get double pay at HK$55,000, your annual gross rises to HK$715,000 and your tax to about HK$75,840; MPF stays at HK$18,000 because of the monthly cap. Our Hong Kong salaries tax guide covers allowances, deductions and provisional tax in detail.

Bonuses and Double Pay in Hong Kong Marketing

Expect a 13th month (double pay) at many local firms and a performance bonus at most MNCs. PayScale's Hong Kong data shows marketing manager bonuses ranging from HK$20,000 to HK$121,000 a year.

Double pay is not required by law, so check the contract. If it says "discretionary", it is not guaranteed. Our guide to double pay and bonuses in Hong Kong explains how to read the wording and what happens if you resign before payout.

Which Skills Raise a Marketer's Pay in Hong Kong?

Data and performance skills pay most. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide says specialists with AI-enhanced CRM and digital analytics capability can expect 3% to 5% pay growth, against flat salaries for most marketers in 2025.

The skills that move offers:

  • CRM and marketing automation: Salesforce, lifecycle tools and segmentation. CRM managers top the manager medians at HK$58,000.
  • Performance and paid media: Owning budgets and proving return on ad spend.
  • eCommerce and marketplaces: Running Tmall, HKTVmall or direct-to-consumer channels.
  • Analytics and AI: GA4, dashboards, SQL basics and AI tools in content and targeting.
  • ESG communications: Morgan McKinley flagged acute shortages in ESG roles in 2025, driving rises of up to 5%.

Do You Need Cantonese or Mandarin for Marketing Jobs in Hong Kong?

For many marketing roles, yes. Marketing is more language-dependent than finance or tech because you are talking to local consumers, local media and mainland China partners.

  • Local consumer marketing, PR and social media: Cantonese is usually required, and written Chinese is often expected for copy approval.
  • Roles covering China or the GBA: Mandarin is a strong advantage or a requirement.
  • Regional APAC roles, B2B, financial services and tech: English-only is common, especially at regional headquarters.

If you only speak English, target regional roles, international brands and B2B companies. Our article on whether you need Cantonese to work in Hong Kong covers which sectors are realistic.

Visa Routes for Foreign Marketers

Most foreign marketers come in through one of three routes, and each needs the Immigration Department's approval before you start work.

  • General Employment Policy (GEP): You need a job offer at a market-rate package, and the employer generally has to show it could not readily fill the role locally. That local recruitment test is waived if the annual package is HK$2 million or more, per the Immigration Department.
  • Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS): Category A is for people who earned HK$2.5 million or more in the past year. Category B covers graduates of eligible universities with at least three years' work experience in the past five years. Category C covers recent graduates from eligible universities with under three years' experience, subject to a quota. No job offer is needed first.
  • IANG: If you graduated from a full-time, locally accredited degree in Hong Kong, you can stay for one year to look for work without a job offer.

On GEP the employer usually has to justify hiring you over a local candidate, so TTPS Category B is often the easier route for an experienced marketer. You can check the current criteria on the Immigration Department's TTPS page.

How to Negotiate a Marketing Salary in Hong Kong

Hong Kong employers expect you to negotiate, and recruiters will usually ask your current salary and your expectation early. Answer the expectation question with a number backed by data.

  1. Anchor on the right benchmark. Quote Morgan McKinley's median for MNC roles and the Jobsdb figure only if you are talking to an SME.
  2. Price your specialism. A CRM or digital manager should not accept a brand manager band.
  3. Negotiate total cash. Push for guaranteed double pay, a clear bonus target and a housing allowance if you are relocating.
  4. Ask for the move premium. Moving jobs is still the fastest way to a meaningful rise when the market is growing at around 3%, Morgan McKinley's forecast.

For the internal route, our guide to asking for a pay rise in Hong Kong has scripts and timing advice.

Is HK$50,000 a Good Salary for a Marketing Manager in Hong Kong?

HK$50,000 a month is a fair but slightly below-median offer for a marketing manager at a multinational, against Morgan McKinley's HK$55,000 median. At a local SME, it is well above Jobsdb's typical HK$37,000.

Our breakdown on whether HK$50,000 is a good salary in Hong Kong runs the budget line by line.

Our rule of thumb: below HK$40,000 is junior for a manager title, HK$45,000 to HK$60,000 is market rate, and above HK$65,000 means senior scope or a premium specialism.
