Data Scientist Salary Hong Kong 2027: Pay Bands, Tax & Visa
Kenji Farre, Director · Oct 27, 2026 · 8 min read

A data scientist in Hong Kong typically earns HK$30,000 to HK$80,000 a month, with a median of about HK$50,000, according to Morgan McKinley's 2026 salary guide. Data analysts sit lower, at HK$23,000 to HK$70,000 (median HK$45,000), while experienced hires in large firms can go much higher: Robert Half's 2026 figures put data scientists at HK$720,000 to HK$1.8 million a year and heads of data at HK$1.2 million to HK$1.8 million. On a HK$60,000 monthly salary, a single person pays roughly HK$76,690 in salaries tax for 2026/27, leaving about HK$52,100 a month after tax and MPF.
This guide covers pay for data analysts, BI analysts, data scientists, data engineers and ML engineers by seniority and sector, plus take-home pay, the skills that move your number, visas and negotiation. For how these roles compare with all Hong Kong workers, see our breakdown of average salaries in Hong Kong.
How Much Does a Data Scientist Earn in Hong Kong?
Most data scientists in Hong Kong earn between HK$40,000 and HK$80,000 a month in base salary. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide gives a low of HK$30,000, a median of HK$50,000 and a high of HK$80,000 a month on permanent contracts.
Jobsdb's October 2026 salary page, which averages the ranges employers put in job ads, shows HK$38,000 to HK$48,000 a month. That's a useful sanity check, because ads skew towards junior and mid-level roles. Senior and head-of roles are rarely advertised with a number.
At the top end, Robert Half's 2026 salary figures are far higher: HK$720,000 a year at the 25th percentile, HK$960,000 at the median and HK$1.8 million at the 75th percentile, excluding bonus and MPF. In our experience, those numbers reflect experienced hires at banks, insurers and large tech firms rather than the typical market.
For context, the Census and Statistics Department's 2025 Annual Earnings and Hours Survey put the median monthly wage for all Hong Kong employees at HK$21,200 in May to June 2025. A mid-level data scientist earns more than double that.

The two guides disagree a lot, especially for analysts. Morgan McKinley's data looks closer to the advertised market (Jobsdb shows data analyst ads averaging HK$25,000 to HK$35,000 a month). Robert Half's looks closer to what large financial institutions pay experienced hires. Use Morgan McKinley as your floor and Robert Half as your stretch target.
What Do You Earn at Each Level: Graduate, Mid, Senior and Lead?
Neither guide splits data roles neatly by seniority, so we've built the bands below from their low, median and high points plus Jobsdb's advertised ranges. Treat them as base salary per month, before bonus.
| Role | Graduate / junior (0 to 2 yrs) | Mid-level (3 to 5 yrs) | Senior (5 to 8 yrs) | Lead / head |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data analyst | HK$23,000 to 35,000 | HK$35,000 to 50,000 | HK$50,000 to 70,000 | HK$50,000 to 70,000 (analytics manager) |
| BI analyst | HK$25,000 to 35,000 | HK$35,000 to 45,000 | HK$45,000 to 65,000 | HK$50,000 to 70,000 (analytics manager) |

Data engineers and ML engineers overlap heavily with software engineering pay. We cover them, together with quants, in our guide to software engineer jobs in Hong Kong.
Graduate and junior data roles
A fresh graduate data analyst usually starts in the low to mid HK$20,000s. Morgan McKinley's low point for data analysts is HK$23,000 a month, and most graduate offers we see sit near that. Banks' graduate analytics programmes and the Big Four pay at the upper end; small agencies and start-ups at the lower end.
Senior and lead roles
The real jump comes when you manage people or own a model that touches revenue or risk. Robert Half's head of data figures (HK$1.2 million to HK$1.8 million a year) are for people running the function, not senior individual contributors.
Data Analyst Salary in Hong Kong vs Data Scientist
A data analyst earns about HK$5,000 a month less than a data scientist at the median, according to Morgan McKinley (HK$45,000 vs HK$50,000). The gap widens with seniority: the analyst high point is HK$70,000, the data scientist high point HK$80,000.
The title matters less than the work. An "analyst" building forecasting models in Python at an insurer often out-earns a "data scientist" making dashboards at a retailer. When you compare offers, compare the job description, not the title.
Business Intelligence Analyst Salary in Hong Kong
BI analysts and developers earn HK$25,000 to HK$65,000 a month, with a median of HK$40,000, based on Morgan McKinley's 2026 figures for BI developers. That makes BI the lowest-paid of the five data roles at most levels.
BI pay catches up when you add data engineering skills. If you can build the pipelines behind the Power BI or Tableau dashboards (SQL, dbt, a cloud warehouse), you can argue for data engineer pay instead.
Data Scientist Salaries by Sector
None of the salary guides we checked publish Hong Kong data pay split by sector, so the table below shows where in the ranges above each sector usually lands, based on what we see in hiring. It is a guide to positioning, not a separate set of numbers.
| Sector | Where pay typically sits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Banks and insurers | Upper half of the range | Risk modelling, credit, fraud, AML analytics. Bonuses can be meaningful. |
| Tech and platforms | Median to upper half | Product analytics and ML. Some firms add equity. |
| Consulting and Big Four | Lower half early on, rising quickly | Strong training, long hours, structured grades. |
| Retail and consumer | Lower half to median | Customer analytics, pricing, supply chain. |
| Government and public bodies | Fixed pay scales | Paid on the civil service Master Pay Scale. |

Government and public sector pay
Government pay is transparent. The Civil Service Bureau's Master Pay Scale, revised from 1 April 2026, runs from HK$63,100 a month at point 27 to HK$122,045 at point 44, and professional grades are placed on it by rank. Pay rises come as an annual civil service adjustment rather than individual negotiation; the 2026/27 offer was 2 per cent.
Take-Home Pay: Data Scientist Salary After Tax
Hong Kong salaries tax is low, and it isn't deducted monthly. You file a return and pay once a year (with a provisional payment for the next year), so put money aside. The examples below use the Inland Revenue Department's 2026/27 basic allowance of HK$145,000, the progressive bands of 2%, 6%, 10% and 14% on each HK$50,000, then 17% on the rest, and the maximum HK$18,000 deduction for mandatory MPF contributions.
| Monthly salary | Annual salary | Salaries tax 2026/27 | Employee MPF | Take-home per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HK$40,000 | HK$480,000 | HK$35,890 | HK$18,000 | about HK$35,500 |
| HK$60,000 | HK$720,000 | HK$76,690 | HK$18,000 | about HK$52,100 |
| HK$90,000 | HK$1,080,000 | HK$137,890 | HK$18,000 | about HK$77,000 |
Source: Inland Revenue Department 2026/27 allowances and rates; MPFA contribution limits. Assumes a single person, 12 months' salary, no bonus and no other deductions.
Your MPF contribution is 5 per cent of relevant income, capped at HK$1,500 a month once you earn above HK$30,000, according to the MPFA. That's why the MPF column is flat.
The IRD also applies a standard rate of 15 per cent on the first HK$5 million of net income (16 per cent above that) and charges whichever is lower. For a single person with only the basic allowance and MPF deduction, the standard rate only starts to win at roughly HK$2.15 million a year, so it won't affect most data professionals.
A bonus is taxed as normal income, so a three-month bonus on the HK$60,000 salary adds HK$180,000 taxed at 17 per cent. For allowances, deductions and how to cut your bill, read our Hong Kong salaries tax guide.
Which Skills Increase a Data Scientist's Salary in Hong Kong?
Pay follows the skills employers struggle to find. Randstad's 2026 Hong Kong outlook describes companies hiring with "extreme selectivity" and a shortage of niche experts alongside a surplus of senior generalists. Specialists get paid; generalists wait.
- Python and SQL: The baseline. Without both, you are competing for the bottom of the analyst range.
- Cloud data platforms: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, plus a warehouse like Snowflake or Databricks. This is what moves a BI analyst into data engineer pay.
- GenAI and LLMs: Banks and insurers are building internal LLM tools, and the government's Talent List names AI specialists with large language model experience. Shipping a production LLM or retrieval system is the strongest pay lever right now.
- Risk modelling: Credit risk, market risk, fraud and AML models. In our experience this is where data scientists at banks pull ahead of tech peers.
- Cantonese or Mandarin: Not required for most roles we list, but useful for client-facing analytics and Greater Bay Area projects.
Certifications that help
Certifications don't replace a portfolio, but they help you clear screening. The ones we see most often in Hong Kong data job ads are cloud data or ML certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud, a Databricks certification, and Power BI or Tableau certifications for BI roles.
For risk modelling at banks, the FRM is respected. A master's in statistics, data science or computer science still matters more for data scientist roles at banks than any single certificate.
Can You Get a Work Visa as a Data Scientist?
Yes. Most overseas data professionals come in on the General Employment Policy (GEP), sponsored by their employer. The Immigration Department says applicants normally need a relevant first degree, a confirmed job offer and a package "broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level". Processing normally takes four weeks after ImmD has every document and the fee.
There's no published minimum salary for GEP. In practice, an offer near the median for your role in the tables above shows you're being paid the market rate. You can read the requirements on the Immigration Department's General Employment Policy page.
Data scientists are on the Talent List
"Experienced data scientists" and "Experienced artificial intelligence (AI) specialists" are both on Hong Kong's Talent List under Innovation and Technology. The data scientist entry asks for a bachelor's or master's in maths, statistics, computer science, engineering, data science or a related subject plus at least 4 years of relevant experience in sectors such as insurance, financial services, retail or healthcare. Check the full Talent List entry for data scientists.
Being on the list helps most if you're applying under talent schemes rather than with a sponsor. We explain how it works in our Hong Kong Talent List guide.
How to Negotiate a Data Science Salary in Hong Kong
Changing jobs is still the fastest way to raise your pay. In Hays' 2026 Asia Salary Guide, 43 per cent of professionals said they grew their salary by more than 10 per cent last year by changing employers.
- Anchor on the right guide. Quote Morgan McKinley for mid-market firms and Robert Half for banks and big tech. Recruiters know both.
- Negotiate base, not just bonus. Bonus is discretionary at most firms. Base drives next year's raise, your MPF and your GEP case.
- Price your niche. If you've shipped an LLM product or a regulatory risk model, say so with numbers: users, savings, model performance.
- Ask about the 13th month. Many Hong Kong firms pay a guaranteed 13th month on top of discretionary bonus. Check it's in writing.
- Ask for a sign-on to cover a lost bonus. If you're leaving before bonus season, the new employer may buy it out.
- Don't accept on the call. Ask for the offer in writing and take a day.
If you're staying put, our guide on asking for a pay rise in Hong Kong walks through timing and scripts.
Is HK$50,000 a Good Salary for a Data Scientist?
HK$50,000 a month is the median for data scientists in Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide, so it's a fair market salary for a mid-level hire. It's comfortable for a single person, tighter for a family paying international school fees and Hong Kong Island rent. We run the full budget in is HK$50,000 a good salary in Hong Kong.
Common Mistakes When Benchmarking Data Pay
- Comparing titles, not work: A "data scientist" in retail and a "data scientist" in a bank's credit risk team are different jobs at different pay.
- Using one source: The gap between Morgan McKinley and Robert Half is huge. Use both, plus job ads.
- Forgetting tax is annual: Your first tax bill arrives in your second year and covers two years at once (final plus provisional). Save for it.
- Ignoring the package: Housing allowance, medical cover and guaranteed 13th month can be worth more than a HK$5,000 base difference.
- Over-relying on certificates: Hong Kong hiring managers ask what you shipped, not what you passed.
