Investment Banking Jobs Hong Kong 2027: Pay, Licences & Hiring
Kenji Farre, Director · Oct 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Hong Kong investment banking is hiring again on the back of a record IPO market: HKEX raised HK$285.8 billion from IPOs in 2025, the most of any exchange globally, and KPMG counts more than HK$388 billion raised in the first nine months of 2026. Mainland brokers lead the deal tables (CICC sponsored 42 Hong Kong IPOs in 2025), so Mandarin is close to essential for deal teams even though graduate postings at Citi and J.P. Morgan only list English. Bankers advising on corporate finance need an SFC Type 6 licence, which means passing HKSI Papers 1, 7 and 11. Base pay in Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide runs from about HK$30,000 to HK$55,000 a month for analysts in finance teams to HK$120,000 to HK$200,000 for managing directors, before bonus.
This guide covers the state of the market, who hires, salaries by level, the licensing exams, the recruiting calendar, the Mandarin question and the visa route. If you are earlier in your career, our graduate programmes guide and off-cycle internships guide cover the entry points.
Is Investment Banking in Hong Kong Hiring in 2027?
Yes, more than at any point since 2021. The driver is equity capital markets. HKEX's 2025 market statistics show IPO funds raised of HK$285.8 billion, up 225% on 2024, from 119 new listings, and Hong Kong ranked first in the world for IPO fundraising that year.
2026 has been bigger. KPMG's third-quarter review counts 116 listings raising more than HK$388 billion between January and September, the highest nine-month total on record, with more than 600 companies in the queue. KPMG expects around HK$500 billion for the full year, which would beat the 2010 record. Hong Kong was second globally behind Nasdaq for the first nine months.
That pipeline needs bodies. Morgan McKinley's 2026 salary guide describes "a modest uptick" in front-office hiring at junior to mid levels, with valuation and financial modelling skills in demand.

Which Banks Hire Investment Bankers in Hong Kong?
The deal tables have changed a lot in five years. Mainland brokers now dominate Hong Kong IPO sponsorship, while global banks compete on the largest and most international deals.
| Rank | Sponsor | Hong Kong IPOs sponsored in 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | CICC | 42 |
| 2 | CITIC Securities | 33 |
| 3 | Huatai International | 22 |
| 4 | CMB International | 13 |
| 5 | Morgan Stanley | 12 |
| 6 | Goldman Sachs | 8 |
| 7 | Guotai Junan International | 7 |
| 7 | China Securities International | 7 |

Only 13 of 55 active sponsors in that ranking were foreign-funded. In the first half of 2026, LSEG data reported by the South China Morning Post put CICC first by IPO proceeds, with US$3.23 billion from 36 deals.
What this means for you: the global banks (Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Citi, UBS, BofA, HSBC) still hire, but in smaller teams with a strong regional focus. The Mainland brokers hire far more, and most of their work is in Mandarin.
How Much Do Investment Bankers Earn in Hong Kong?
No major recruiter publishes a classic M&A or ECM pay table for Hong Kong, so use the closest named data. Morgan McKinley's 2026 Hong Kong salary guide gives monthly base salaries for front-office finance teams. These figures exclude bonus.
| Level | Project finance (monthly, low to high) | Structured finance (monthly, low to high) |
|---|---|---|

For corporate finance roles outside banks, Robert Half's 2026 guide puts a corporate finance analyst at a large company on HK$500,000 to HK$640,000 a year (25th to 75th percentile) and a corporate finance director on HK$1.26 million to HK$2.03 million.
Bonuses are the big variable. Robert Half calls them "a critical part of total compensation" in financial services but publishes no figures, and they swing with deal volume. In a year like 2026, ECM teams will do well; in 2022 and 2023 many juniors received little.
Hong Kong's tax helps. Since 2024/25, according to the Inland Revenue Department, salaries tax is capped at a standard rate of 15% on the first HK$5 million of net income and 16% above that. Our salaries tax guide has the bands and allowances.
Do You Need Mandarin for Investment Banking in Hong Kong?
For most deal teams, yes, even if the job ad doesn't say so. Citi's and J.P. Morgan's 2027 Hong Kong summer analyst postings list only fluency in English. But when one Mainland broker sponsored 42 of the 117 Hong Kong IPOs in Ryanben Capital's 2025 count, and the issuers are mostly Mainland companies, the client conversations happen in Mandarin.
J.P. Morgan's China healthcare coverage analyst role, for example, asks for proficiency "in Mandarin to liaise with Chinese clients". Recruiters have said for years that the large majority of Hong Kong banking searches require it.
Where non-Mandarin speakers do get hired:
- Global banks' regional teams covering Southeast Asia, Australia, India or Japan.
- Sector specialists with rare product knowledge (infrastructure, project finance, leveraged finance).
- Private credit, restructuring and debt advisory, where documentation is in English.
- Lateral hires with deal experience in London or New York who bring a client book.
Cantonese matters far less than Mandarin in banking. Our guide on whether you need Cantonese to work in Hong Kong covers the wider job market.
What Licence Do Investment Bankers Need in Hong Kong?
Anyone advising on corporate finance for a licensed firm must be licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for Type 6 regulated activity (advising on corporate finance). Your bank applies for the licence on your behalf; you need to pass the exams.
Under the SFC's Guidelines on Competence, a Type 6 licensed representative needs:
- HKSI Paper 7 (Financial Markets) and Paper 11 (Corporate Finance) as the recognised industry qualification.
- HKSI Paper 1 (Fundamentals of Securities and Futures Regulation) as the local regulatory paper.
- Pass dates within three years before the licence application, as a general rule.
Extra papers apply depending on your role:
- Paper 16 for sponsor work on IPOs, passed within three years before or six months after your first sponsor engagement, with no extensions. Paper 15 is an alternative.
- Paper 17 for takeovers and mergers work.
- Paper 5 if you become a Responsible Officer, along with three years of relevant experience in the past six and two years of management experience.
Note that Paper 6 covers asset management, not corporate finance, despite what some guides say.
HKSI exam fees and format
The HKSI Licensing Examination is computer based and multiple choice, with a 70% pass mark per paper, in English or Traditional Chinese. Most papers run monthly.
| Paper | Questions and time | Fee (Hong Kong centre) |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 60 questions, 90 minutes | HK$1,800 |
| Paper 5, 15, 16, 17 | 40 questions, 60 minutes | HK$2,000 each |
| Paper 7 | 60 questions, 90 minutes | HK$1,620 |
| Paper 11 | 40 questions, 90 minutes | HK$1,620 |

A first-year Type 6 analyst taking Papers 1, 7 and 11 pays HK$5,040 in exam fees, which most banks reimburse. You can book through the HKSI Licensing Examination page. Overseas centres cost about HK$450 more per paper.
When Do Hong Kong Investment Banking Applications Open?
Summer analyst recruiting runs a year ahead, the same as London and New York.
- Applications open: June to August of the year before the internship. J.P. Morgan posted its 2027 Hong Kong summer analyst role on 1 June 2026; Citi posted on 6 August 2026.
- Deadlines: Citi's 2027 Hong Kong investment banking summer analyst programme closes on 30 October 2026 at 23:59 Hong Kong time and reviews on a rolling basis. J.P. Morgan's has already closed.
- Programme length: nine to 12 weeks from late May or June. Morgan Stanley also runs a six-month industrial placement from mid-January to mid-July 2027.
- Eligibility: penultimate-year students. Citi's programme is for students graduating between December 2027 and June 2028.
Apply early. Rolling review means places fill before the deadline.
How to Break Into Investment Banking in Hong Kong
The routes in, roughly in order of how often they work:
- Summer analyst to full-time offer. Still the main route at global banks.
- Lateral move from Big Four transaction services or valuation. Hong Kong banks hire from deal advisory teams, especially for ECM and IPO due diligence.
- Internal transfer from London, New York or Singapore. The easiest route for a visa because your employer handles it.
- Off-cycle internships at Mainland brokers or boutiques, if you speak Mandarin.
- Adjacent roles in compliance, research or corporate banking, then an internal move.
Whatever the route, have a tight story on why Hong Kong and what you know about the deal flow. Interviewers expect you to know the recent big listings and the A+H trend: KPMG counted 24 dual A and H share listings in the first half of 2026 alone, making up 58% of funds raised.
Can Foreigners Get a Visa for Investment Banking in Hong Kong?
Yes. Most foreign bankers come on the General Employment Policy (GEP) visa, sponsored by the bank. The Immigration Department says GEP applicants normally need a relevant first degree, a genuine job that can't readily be filled locally and market-level pay, and processing normally takes four weeks.
Since 26 February 2025 the fees are a HK$600 application fee plus a HK$1,300 visa fee for stays over 180 days. Banks pay these. The initial stay is normally up to three years, and GEP holders with two or more years on the scheme and HK$2 million or more in assessable income can get a five-year extension on time limitation only, which makes moving between banks much simpler.
Graduates of Hong Kong universities can use the IANG visa instead, and graduates of top global universities may qualify for TTPS. See our GEP visa guide for the full rules.
Hong Kong vs Singapore for Investment Banking
Hong Kong has the deal flow; Singapore has the lifestyle pitch and the Southeast Asia coverage. For ECM and China-related M&A, Hong Kong wins easily in 2026. For Southeast Asian coverage, sovereign wealth and private equity, Singapore is the hub. Our Hong Kong vs Singapore guide compares tax, visas and cost of living.
