Hong Kong Graduate Programmes 2027: Deadlines, Pay & How to Apply

Most Hong Kong graduate programmes for 2027 intakes are open now and close between late October and the end of November 2026. HSBC and Swire close at the end of October, MTR on 27 October, P&G on 2 November, Cathay Pacific's Digital & IT stream on 15 November and Hang Seng Bank on 30 November. Programmes typically run 24 months and start in July to September 2027. Swire's management programme pays HK$32,300 a month plus housing, while the average starting salary for new graduate hires in 2025 was about HK$21,000.

This guide lists the 2027 programmes that accept English speakers, the deadlines, what they pay, the visa rules for non-local graduates and how the assessment process works. If you're still a year away from graduating, read our internships in Hong Kong guide as well, because summer internships are the main route into the bank programmes.

What Is a Graduate Programme in Hong Kong?

A graduate programme (often called a management trainee or MT programme in Hong Kong) is a structured entry-level job for final-year students and recent graduates. You rotate through two to four teams over 18 to 36 months, get formal training and a mentor, and are usually placed in a permanent role at the end.

They differ from ordinary graduate jobs in three ways: one big hiring round a year, a multi-stage assessment process, and a fixed start date. Miss the window and you wait a year.

A word on "rolling": HSBC and several others review applications as they arrive and can close streams before the official deadline. Treat every deadline as two weeks earlier than it says.

Graduate Programmes by Sector

Banking and Finance

Banks run the most English-friendly programmes in Hong Kong because their graduate intakes are global and the working language is English.

  • HSBC Global Graduate Programme. Open to final-year students and recent graduates available to start from July 2027. The CIB streams (Global Markets Sales and Trading, and Investment Banking) ask for a GPA of at least 3.2/4.0 or 4.0/5.0 and less than two years of full-time experience.
  • Standard Chartered International Graduate Programme. A 24-month programme starting in July, with applications opening from August to September. Hong Kong is one of its largest hubs.
  • Hang Seng Bank Management Trainee Programme. Streams in Commercial Banking, Global Markets, Hang Seng Indexes and Retail Banking and Wealth. You need a Second Class Honours degree, no more than three years' experience, and excellent written and spoken English and Chinese. Skip this one if you don't read Chinese.
  • HKEX Graduate Associate Programme. A 24-month programme with Business, Regulatory and Technology pathways. It wants a GPA of 3.5/4.0 or a 2:1, and graduation between August 2025 and July 2027.
  • UBS Graduate Talent Program. Hong Kong streams in Global Markets, GIC Solutions and Group Real Estate and Supply Chain. At least one UBS listing states that visa sponsorship isn't available, so you'll need your own right to work.

The bulge bracket catch: at J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and similar firms, most full-time analyst places in Hong Kong go to their own summer interns. If you want one of those jobs, the 2027 summer internship is the real application, not the graduate role.

Conglomerates and Corporates

  • Swire Management Programme. One of the best-paid general management schemes in the city: HK$32,300 a month plus housing. You need excellent English, and Chinese helps. Expect to work mostly in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, and possibly elsewhere. The deadline is 31 October and the process runs November to January.
  • P&G. Its Hong Kong graduate programme is open to those graduating in 2027 or with less than three years' experience, and it explicitly welcomes IANG holders. Applications close 2 November.
  • Jardines. If you've seen old guides recommending the Jardine Executive Trainee Scheme (JETS), note that Jardines says its formal graduate programme is no longer in place. The group now hires graduates directly into its businesses, so check Hongkong Land, Dairy Farm and Jardine Pacific careers pages instead.

Aviation, Transport and Infrastructure

Professional Services and Tech

  • PwC Hong Kong. Graduate roles across Audit and Assurance, Risk Assurance, Consulting, Tax, a three-year Asia Pacific Deals programme and a two-year X-Venturer rotation. English is required and Putonghua is an advantage. Deloitte, EY and KPMG run similar autumn hiring rounds for September starts.
  • Accenture and FDM Group. Both are hiring 2027 graduate cohorts in Hong Kong, including Accenture's AI-Native Analyst Program and FDM's software engineering and AI programmes. FDM trains you and places you with client firms.

How Much Do Graduate Programmes Pay in Hong Kong?

Programme pay sits well above the average graduate salary, which is why competition is intense.

BenchmarkMonthly pay
Average salary of new graduate hires, 2025 (JIJIS)HK$20,961
Average graduate of the eight public universities, 2023/24About HK$27,500
Average HKU graduate, 2023/24About HK$33,500
Swire Management Programme, 2027HK$32,300 plus housing

Sources: SCMP on JIJIS 2025 data, graduate employment surveys reported by DotDotNews, Swire.

Global bank graduate roles usually pay above all of these, plus a bonus. For the full picture of what salaries look like after tax, see our average salary in Hong Kong guide.

How Competitive Is the 2027 Graduate Market?

More competitive than any year since the pandemic. The universities' shared job portal, JIJIS, listed 30,798 graduate vacancies in 2025, 55% fewer than the 68,728 a year earlier, and new-hire pay rose only 0.5%.

What that means for you:

  • Apply to 15 to 25 programmes, not five. The big names get thousands of applications for a few dozen places.
  • Apply in the first two weeks. Rolling reviews reward early applicants.
  • Build a backup list of direct-entry graduate jobs. Smaller firms hire graduates year-round without the formal programme label.

Can Foreign Graduates Join a Hong Kong Graduate Programme?

Yes, and your visa situation decides how easy it is.

Your situationVisa routeCan you work for any employer?
Graduating from a Hong Kong universityIANG, 24 months, no job offer neededYes
Graduate of a top 100 world university in the last five yearsTTPS Category C, 24 monthsYes
Graduate of another overseas universityGEP, sponsored by your employerNo, tied to the sponsor

Sources: IANG, TTPS.

IANG is the strongest position to be in. Recent non-local graduates of Hong Kong universities don't need a job offer to apply and can take up and change employment freely. See our IANG visa guide.

TTPS Category C covers degree holders from listed top universities who graduated in the past five years with less than three years' experience. It has an annual quota of 10,000 and lets you change employers without approval. Our TTPS guide explains how to check if your university qualifies.

GEP works for graduate roles too, but some employers won't sponsor entry-level hires. Read each listing for phrases like "right to work in Hong Kong required" or "sponsorship not available". If you're in that position, applying for TTPS before the graduate cycle makes you far easier to hire. For all the routes, see our Hong Kong work visa guide.

How the Graduate Assessment Process Works

Most programmes follow the same five stages, running from October to January:

  1. Online application. CV, academic results and two or three short motivation questions. Use the employer's own language from its programme page.
  2. Online tests. Numerical, verbal and logical reasoning, plus a situational judgement test. Practise timed tests beforehand, as these screen out most applicants.
  3. Video interview. Usually recorded, not live, with three to five questions and 30 seconds to prepare each.
  4. Assessment centre. A half-day or full day of group exercises, a case study, a presentation and interviews. Swire runs its process from November to January.
  5. Final interview. Often with a senior business head. Offers usually land between December and February.

Our Hong Kong job interview questions guide covers the competency questions that come up at stages 3 to 5, and our Hong Kong resume sample shows the CV format recruiters expect.

How to Stand Out as a Non-Chinese Speaker

  • Pick programmes that ask for English only. Hang Seng and some local conglomerates need Chinese. Swire, HKEX, Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong streams and PwC ask for English, with Chinese as a plus at most, and the global banks run their graduate intakes in English.
  • Say what your visa status is. Put "IANG holder", "TTPS approved" or "Requires GEP sponsorship" at the top of your CV. Uncertainty costs you interviews.
  • Show you want Hong Kong specifically. Recruiters worry overseas graduates will leave after a year. Mention family, study, internships or a long-term plan here.
  • Use the Mandarin you have. Even basic Putonghua is worth listing on the CV.
  • Get a Hong Kong internship first. A summer in the city makes you look committed and gives you referees the hiring team knows.

FAQs: Hong Kong Graduate Programmes

When do Hong Kong graduate programmes open for 2027?

Most opened in August and September 2026 and close between late October and the end of November 2026. A few, like Standard Chartered, open as early as August, so check in late summer every year.

What is a management trainee programme in Hong Kong?

It's the local name for a graduate programme: a structured two-year entry-level role with rotations, training and a permanent position at the end. Banks, conglomerates, utilities and retailers all run them.

How much does a management trainee earn in Hong Kong?

It varies widely by employer. Swire pays HK$32,300 a month plus housing for its 2027 intake, global banks usually pay more, and many local MT schemes pay closer to the HK$21,000 average for new graduate hires.

Can international students apply for Hong Kong graduate programmes?

Yes. Graduates of Hong Kong universities get the IANG visa and can work anywhere. Overseas graduates of top 100 universities can use TTPS Category C. Others need the employer to sponsor a GEP visa, which not every programme offers.

Do I need to speak Cantonese for a graduate programme in Hong Kong?

Not for most international employers. Swire, HKEX, Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong streams and PwC ask for English, and the global banks' graduate intakes work in English. Hang Seng Bank and some local firms require Chinese.

What GPA do Hong Kong graduate programmes require?

Usually a 2:1 or equivalent. HKEX asks for 3.5 out of 4.0, while HSBC's corporate and investment banking streams ask for 3.2 out of 4.0. Some programmes don't set a minimum but filter heavily on tests.

Is the Jardine Executive Trainee Scheme still running?

No. Jardines says its formal graduate programme is no longer in place, and its businesses now hire graduates directly. Check the careers pages of individual Jardine companies.

What happens if I miss the graduate programme deadline?

Apply for direct-entry graduate jobs, which open year-round, or for off-cycle internships that can convert into full-time roles. You can reapply the next year if you're still within the graduation window, which is often two years.

Can I apply to more than one stream at the same company?

It depends on the employer. Cathay Pacific says you may apply for more than one internship or trainee programme, and HKEX lets you pick up to two pathways, but some banks only accept one application per cycle. Read the FAQs before you submit.

Is it harder to get a graduate job in Hong Kong in 2027?

Yes. Graduate vacancies on the universities' shared portal fell 55% in 2025 to 30,798. Apply early and widely, and target English-first employers if you don't speak Chinese.
