Financial controllers earn HK$90,000 to HK$130,000 a month (median HK$110,000), finance directors HK$110,000 to HK$180,000, and CFOs HK$180,000 to HK$350,000 in commerce. Job-ad data runs lower: Jobsdb's November 2026 figures put finance managers at HK$41,000 to HK$51,000 and financial controllers at HK$55,000 to HK$65,000 a month, which reflects the wider mix of smaller local firms.
This guide compares the main salary sources, explains why they differ so much, and covers bonus, tax, visas and how to move up from finance manager to FC in Hong Kong.
How Much Does a Finance Manager Earn in Hong Kong?
Most finance managers at multinationals and listed companies fall between HK$60,000 and HK$80,000 a month. At smaller local firms, HK$40,000 to HK$55,000 is common.
The gap between sources is large, so it helps to see them side by side.

Why Do the Salary Figures Differ So Much?
Recruiter guides and job boards measure different things.
- Recruiter guides like Morgan McKinley's are based on roles the firm actually placed, which skew towards multinationals, listed companies and banks that pay agency fees.
- Jobsdb's figures come from salary ranges employers put in ads. These cover far more small and mid-size local companies, where "finance manager" can mean a one-person finance team.
- Robert Half reports annual starting salaries excluding bonus, benefits and MPF, split by company size.
So if you're coming from a Big Four background into a Hong Kong-listed group or MNC regional office, use the recruiter guides as your benchmark. If you're looking at local trading or manufacturing firms, Jobsdb is closer to reality.
Financial Controller Salary in Hong Kong
The financial controller (FC) step is where pay really moves. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide gives these monthly figures.
| Role | Commercial (low / median / high, HK$ a month) | Financial services (low / median / high, HK$ a month) |
|---|---|---|
| Finance Manager | 60,000 / 70,000 / 80,000 | 50,000 / 60,000 / 85,000 |
| FP&A Manager | 60,000 / 70,000 / 80,000 | 50,000 / 65,000 / 90,000 |
| Financial Controller | 90,000 / 110,000 / 130,000 | 73,000 / 95,000 / 120,000 |
| Finance Director | 110,000 / 140,000 / 180,000 | 95,000 / 120,000 / 180,000 |
| CFO | 180,000 / 220,000 / 350,000 | 150,000 / 220,000 / 350,000 |

Robert Half's 2026 guide puts financial controllers at small and mid-size firms at HK$810,000 to HK$960,000 a year (25th to 75th percentile, median HK$880,000), and at large firms at HK$960,000 to HK$2,030,000 (median HK$1,610,000). Jobsdb's job-ad data for November 2026 shows HK$55,000 to HK$65,000 a month for financial controllers.
One quirk worth knowing: Robert Half's published median for a large-company FC (HK$1.61 million) is above its median for a large-company finance director (HK$1.44 million). Titles in Hong Kong are loose, and a "FC" at a big listed group can carry more weight than a "finance director" at a regional office.
FP&A Manager Salary
FP&A managers earn similar base pay to finance managers. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide puts them at HK$60,000 to HK$80,000 a month in commerce and HK$50,000 to HK$90,000 in financial services.
FP&A roles are concentrated in regional headquarters of multinationals, which is why commercial pay sits at the same level as finance managers despite FP&A being a narrower function.
Finance Director and CFO Salary
At the top, the ranges widen.
- Finance director: HK$110,000 to HK$180,000 a month in commerce; Robert Half puts large-company FDs at HK$1.08 million to HK$1.8 million a year.
- CFO: HK$180,000 to HK$350,000 a month in commerce, per Morgan McKinley. Robert Half puts small and mid-size company CFOs at HK$1.01 million to HK$1.58 million a year.
CFO packages at listed companies often include long-term incentives and share awards that don't show up in base salary data.
What About Bonuses and Benefits?
Base salary is only part of the package. Common extras for finance managers and above in Hong Kong:
- Double pay (a 13th month), standard at many local companies. See our guide to double pay and bonuses in Hong Kong.
- Discretionary bonus, often 1 to 3 months for finance managers and more for FCs at MNCs.
- MPF employer contributions, plus top-ups at larger firms.
- Medical insurance, sometimes including family.
- Housing allowance, now rarer and mostly for senior expat hires. Our expat package guide covers what's still on offer.
How Much Tax Does a Finance Manager Pay in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong's salaries tax is one of the lowest in the region. According to the Inland Revenue Department, progressive rates are 2%, 6%, 10% and 14% on successive HK$50,000 bands, then 17% on the remainder. Your tax is capped at the standard rate: 15% on the first HK$5 million of net income and 16% above that.
For 2026/27, the basic allowance rises to HK$145,000 and the married person's allowance to HK$290,000.
| Monthly salary | Annual salary | Approximate annual tax (single, basic allowance and HK$18,000 MPF deduction) | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| HK$60,000 | HK$720,000 | HK$76,690 | 10.7% |
| HK$80,000 | HK$960,000 | HK$117,490 | 12.2% |
| HK$110,000 | HK$1,320,000 | HK$178,690 | 13.5% |

Do You Need HKICPA for a Finance Manager Job?
No, not by law. Finance manager and FC roles in commerce don't require Hong Kong Institute of CPAs membership. Many employers ask for a recognised accounting qualification such as HKICPA, ACCA, CPA Australia, ICAEW or CIMA.
HKICPA membership matters more if you want to sign audit reports or work in practice. Our guide to accounting jobs in Hong Kong covers how overseas accountants join HKICPA.
Can Foreign Finance Managers Get a Hong Kong Work Visa?
Yes. Most come on the General Employment Policy (GEP) visa, with the employer as sponsor. At these salary levels, the GEP's requirement that pay is broadly in line with the market is rarely an issue.
Accountants are also on the Hong Kong Talent List, added from 1 March 2025 according to HKICPA, and the Financial Services segment includes "Experienced Financial Professionals in ESG". That can help under the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme. See our work visa guide for every route.
How to Move From Finance Manager to Financial Controller
- Own the full close. FC roles want people who've run month-end, audit and statutory reporting end to end.
- Get China exposure. Many Hong Kong FC roles cover mainland entities. Mandarin and PRC GAAP or tax knowledge are a real advantage.
- Lead a system change. ERP implementations (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) are a common FC interview topic.
- Learn the listing rules if you want a listed-company role. HKEX reporting experience is a strong differentiator.
- Use recruiters selectively. Most FC roles at MNCs are filled through specialist agencies. Build relationships with two or three specialist finance recruiters rather than ten generalists.
