Accounting Jobs Hong Kong 2027: HKICPA Routes & Salaries
Kenji Farre, Director · Oct 20, 2026 · 8 min read

Overseas accountants can work in Hong Kong in most accounting and finance jobs without converting, but you need HKICPA membership to call yourself a CPA and an AFRC practising certificate to sign audit reports. ICAEW, ICAS, CA ANZ, CPA Canada, Chartered Accountants Ireland, SAICA and ICAZ members get reciprocal membership, while ACCA and CPA Australia members must still pass the HKICPA QP Final Examination or capstone, according to HKICPA's April 2026 list. No US body is on that list. Joining costs HK$5,980 in the first year (HK$3,200 application plus HK$2,780 annual fee) under the 2027 fee schedule, and accountants have been on the Talent List since March 2025.
This guide covers the conversion route for each overseas qualification, fees, the practising certificate, 2026 salaries across audit, commercial and banking roles, visas, language and how to get hired from abroad.
Can Overseas Accountants Work in Hong Kong?
Yes. Most accounting jobs in Hong Kong, from financial accountant to CFO, do not legally require a Hong Kong qualification. Employers care that you are qualified (ACCA, ICAEW, CPA Australia and so on) and have the right experience.
Where HKICPA membership matters:
- Using the title "CPA" in Hong Kong. Only HKICPA members can.
- Signing audit reports. You need a practising certificate, and only HKICPA members can apply for one (AFRC).
- Promotion in audit firms. Big Four and mid-tier firms usually expect managers on a partner track to convert.
- Some visa specs. The Talent List definition for accountants refers to HKICPA or reciprocal-body qualifications (more below).

What Accounting Jobs Are Available in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong accounting work falls into four main groups. English-only candidates do best in the last two.
- External audit: Big Four and mid-tier firms, with heavy IPO and listed-company work.
- Commercial finance: financial accountants, FP&A, finance managers and controllers at regional headquarters and listed groups.
- Banking and funds: product control, regulatory reporting, fund accounting and financial accounting at banks and asset managers.
- Internal audit and controls: at banks, insurers and corporates.
Demand is picking up. Financing and insurance had the most private-sector vacancies of any industry in June 2026, at 4,920, while professional and business services vacancies fell 15% year on year, per the Census and Statistics Department. Finance teams inside banks and funds are hiring faster than accounting firms.
The IPO market is the other driver. Hong Kong raised US$48.4 billion from 112 main-board IPOs in the first nine months of 2026, the highest since 1980, according to LSEG data reported by the SCMP. IPO work needs auditors, reporting accountants and listed-company financial controllers.
Do You Need HKICPA Membership to Work as an Accountant in Hong Kong?
Not for most jobs. In commercial finance, banking and funds, an ACCA, ICAEW or CPA Australia qualification is accepted as it stands.
My advice: if you are in audit and plan to stay more than a couple of years, convert. If you are in industry, convert only if it is cheap and quick for your body (the reciprocal ones) or your employer pays.
How Do ACCA, ICAEW, CPA Australia and Other Members Join HKICPA?
HKICPA has three types of agreement with overseas bodies. Which one applies to you decides whether conversion is a form or an exam.
| Your qualification | Agreement with HKICPA | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| ICAEW | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; full exemption from QP and experience |
| ICAS | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; full exemption |
| CA ANZ | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; full exemption |
| Chartered Accountants Ireland | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; full exemption |
| SAICA | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; full exemption |
| CPA Canada | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; Canadian tax and law CPD within 2 years; legacy CGA/CMA need 2 years' post-qualifying experience |
| ICA Zimbabwe | Reciprocal (RMA) | Apply; pass aptitude tests on HK law and taxation |
| ACCA | Mutual recognition (MRA) | Pass QP Final Exam or capstone; 3 years' experience; must have qualified in HK or the UK |
| CPA Australia | Mutual recognition (MRA) | Pass QP Final Exam or capstone; 3 years' experience; degree not from a Mainland or HK university |
| CIMA | Exam paper exemptions only | QP modules 13 and 14, capstone, HK law aptitude test, 3 years' experience |
| US CPA (AICPA/NASBA) | None listed | No current agreement on HKICPA's list |

Reciprocal members (ICAEW, ICAS, CA ANZ and others)
If you are a member in good standing and fit and proper, you get full exemption from the Qualification Programme, aptitude tests and practical experience, per the Guide to Membership. This is the easiest route in.
ACCA members
ACCA is recognised, but not automatically. The ACCA and HKICPA MRA was renewed in 2025 and runs to 30 June 2028. Under it you need at least an HKQF Level 4 qualification, specified ACCA papers including audit and assurance, three years' accounting experience, and a pass in the HKICPA QP Final Examination or capstone. You must also have qualified in Hong Kong or the UK. ACCA members who qualified elsewhere, check with HKICPA before you plan around this route.
CPA Australia members
The MRA terms are similar: completed CPA Program, three years' practical experience and the QP Final Exam or capstone, with extra tests depending on your QP stage. Your qualifying degree must not be from a Mainland or Hong Kong university (Guide to Membership).
US CPAs
No US body is on HKICPA's April 2026 list of recognised overseas bodies, so there is no listed fast route for US CPAs. Older articles describe a 2011 HKICPA agreement with the US IQAB, but that was a five-year pact and it no longer appears on the list. If you hold a US CPA, contact HKICPA directly about which QP modules, if any, you can be exempted from. The good news: US CPAs are well regarded at US banks and funds here, and most of those jobs don't need HKICPA at all.
How Much Does HKICPA Membership Cost?
Joining in the first half of 2027 costs HK$5,980; joining in the second half costs HK$4,590.
| Fee (2027 schedule) | Amount (HK$) |
|---|---|
| One-off application fee | 3,200 |
| Annual fee, joining 1 January to 30 June 2027 | 2,780 |
| Annual fee, joining 1 July to 31 December 2027 | 1,390 |
| First-year total, joining in H1 | 5,980 |
| First-year total, joining in H2 | 4,590 |
| Hardcopy surcharge (per year) | 450 |
| Deducted on rejected or withdrawn application | 500 |

Those fees cover membership only. ACCA and CPA Australia members also pay for the QP Final Exam or capstone. Once you're in, the HKICPA member portal is where you log in to manage fees and CPD.
Can You Sign Audit Reports? The AFRC Practising Certificate
To sign audit reports in Hong Kong you need a practising certificate from the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC), not HKICPA. Only HKICPA members can apply. The requirements, per the AFRC FAQ:
- Experience: 30 months' full-time approved accounting experience after becoming a member of a specified body or a CPA, or four years with at least one year after membership.
- Hong Kong experience: at least one year of full-time approved experience in Hong Kong within the three years before you apply.
- Exams: pass HKICPA-set exams, including local law and taxation.
- Ordinary residence: meet one of the criteria, such as being in Hong Kong for 180+ days in the previous 12 months.
- Start on time: begin practising within six months of the effective date, and notify changes within 14 days.
Certificates expire on 31 December of the year they take effect, and the renewal window runs from 1 November to 15 December, according to the AFRC's guide. If you hold one, the 2027 renewal window opens on 1 November 2026.
For most overseas accountants, this is a year-two or year-three question. You cannot get a certificate on arrival because of the Hong Kong experience rule.

Pay rises are modest. Morgan McKinley reports annual increments averaged 3% to 5% in 2025, with entry-level pay up as much as 8% in 2026 and middle-to-senior hiring roughly flat. The HKIHRM's 2026 survey put the average rise in accounting and professional services at 2.0%, the lowest of any sector, against 3.8% in banking and financial services, per The Standard.
That gap is the single best argument for moving from practice into a bank or fund finance team once you have made manager.
What Accounting Jobs Are There in the Banking Sector?
Banks and asset managers are the best fit for English-speaking accountants. The main roles:
- Product control: daily P&L and valuation for trading desks. Median HK$63,000 a month.
- Regulatory reporting: HKMA and group returns. VPs earn a median HK$90,000.
- Fund accounting: NAV, fund financials and administrator oversight. Median HK$40,000.
- Financial accounting and group reporting: consolidation and statutory accounts for the Hong Kong entity.
All medians from Morgan McKinley 2026. Banking roles often sit close to compliance; if controls work appeals, read our guide to compliance, AML and KYC jobs in Hong Kong.
Are There Part-Time, Contract or Graduate Accounting Jobs?
Contract roles are common, especially for year-end, IPO and transformation projects. True part-time accounting jobs are rarer and mostly in small firms. Morgan McKinley's 2026 contract rates put a contract accounts assistant at HK$17,000 to HK$26,000 a month, a contract financial accountant at HK$30,000 to HK$50,000 and a contract fund accountant at HK$35,000 to HK$55,000.
Graduates usually start as audit trainees on HK$16,000 to HK$19,000 a month, per Morgan McKinley. Non-local students who graduate from a Hong Kong university can stay on the IANG visa and apply to Big Four intakes. Our guide to graduate programmes in Hong Kong lists the firms and their application windows.
Do You Need Cantonese or Mandarin for Accounting Jobs?
It depends on the client. English-only works at international banks, funds, regional headquarters of multinationals and Big Four financial services assurance teams. Mandarin is a major advantage for China-facing audit, A-share and H-share IPO work and Mainland groups, and that is a big slice of Hong Kong audit work. Cantonese matters most at local SMEs and small CPA firms.
My take: an English-only ACA or CA ANZ will get interviews at banks and funds quickly, and struggle more for general audit. Target accordingly.
Which Visa Should an Overseas Accountant Use?
Most overseas accountants come in on the GEP with an employer sponsor, or on TTPS if they qualify. Accountants were added to the Talent List from 1 March 2025, one of nine new professions.
| Route | Who it suits | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| GEP | Anyone with a Hong Kong job offer | Employer sponsors; about 4 weeks to process |
| GEP via Talent List | Qualified accountants in audit or reporting roles | Employer skips the local market availability test |
| TTPS | Graduates of eligible universities, high earners | No job offer needed |
| QMAS | Experienced accountants without an offer | Talent List gives favourable points |
| IANG | Hong Kong university graduates | 24 months, no offer needed |

Does the Talent List help accountants?
Less than you might think. The Talent List spec requires a relevant bachelor's degree, completion of or exemption from QP Associate Level modules or an HKICPA, CICPA or RMA-body qualification, and experience in accounting and audit firms. Only 63 approvals had been made under "accountants" to the end of March 2026 (11 GEP, 52 ASMTP), and the job must be in financial reporting, auditing or assurance, per a Legislative Council reply in April 2026.
Compare that with the general schemes: 31,278 GEP applications and 31,508 TTPS applications were approved in 2025, per ImmD open data for GEP and TTPS. Standard GEP and TTPS are how most accountants actually arrive. See our Hong Kong Talent List guide, GEP visa guide and TTPS guide.
All these schemes charge a HK$600 application fee plus HK$1,300 for a visa over 180 days, per ImmD.
What Is Driving Demand for Accountants in 2026 and 2027?
- IPOs: the record 2026 pipeline needs reporting accountants and listed-company controllers.
- Finance transformation and controls: Morgan McKinley lists finance transformation leads, internal audit and controls specialists and finance change PMs among the most in-demand roles.
- FP&A and business partnering: Robert Walters names FP&A, commercial finance and regional finance managers as hot roles for 2026.
- Sustainability reporting: over 9,700 applications were approved under the green and sustainable finance training scheme to end-March 2026, per the April 2026 LegCo reply.
- Hiring sentiment: ManpowerGroup's Q4 2026 survey shows a net employment outlook of +21% for finance and insurance, per The Standard.
The risk: the same Robert Walters survey found 39% of employers see accounting and finance as the function most at risk from AI. Transactional roles will shrink. Analysis, controls and reporting judgement will not.
How Many CPD Hours Do Hong Kong CPAs Need?
HKICPA members need 120 CPD hours per rolling three-year period, 60 of them verifiable, and at least 20 hours a year, with the CPD year running 1 December to 30 November, per the HKICPA CPD FAQ.
From 1 December 2026, all members need at least two verifiable ethics hours a year, and at least 30 of the 60 verifiable hours must be structured learning, per A Plus 2026 Issue 1. Practising certificate holders also need five verifiable hours a year in accounting or auditing.
How to Get an Accounting Job in Hong Kong From Overseas
- Check your conversion route. If you are ICAEW, CA ANZ or another RMA body, apply to HKICPA early; it strengthens your CV here.
- Target banks, funds and regional HQs if you don't speak Mandarin. Their hiring is growing fastest.
- Lead with the hot skills: product control, regulatory reporting, FP&A, controls and transformation.
- Use specialist finance recruiters. Most mid-level hiring in banking and funds goes through them.
- Sort your visa story. If you qualify for TTPS, get it first; it removes the sponsor question.
- Ask about internal transfers. If you work for a Big Four firm or a global bank, a secondment is often the easiest way in.
FAQs: Accounting Jobs in Hong Kong
Can I work as an accountant in Hong Kong with an overseas qualification?
Yes. Most accounting and finance jobs accept ACCA, ICAEW, CPA Australia and other overseas qualifications as they are. You only need HKICPA membership to use the CPA title or apply for a practising certificate to sign audits.
Is ACCA recognised in Hong Kong?
Yes, through a mutual recognition agreement that runs to 30 June 2028, per ACCA. To become an HKICPA member you still need to pass the QP Final Exam or capstone and have three years' experience. You must also have qualified in Hong Kong or the UK.
Do ICAEW members get HKICPA membership automatically?
Almost. ICAEW has a reciprocal agreement, so members in good standing get full exemption from the QP, aptitude tests and experience requirements. You still need to apply and pay the HK$3,200 application fee.
How can a US CPA become a Hong Kong CPA?
No US body is listed on HKICPA's April 2026 list of recognised overseas bodies, so there is no listed fast track. The 2011 agreement with the US was a five-year pact and is no longer on the list. Contact HKICPA about possible exemptions before you plan around conversion.

HK$5,980 if you join between 1 January and 30 June 2027 (HK$3,200 application plus HK$2,780 annual fee), or HK$4,590 if you join in the second half of the year, per the 2027 fee schedule.

Are accountants on the Hong Kong Talent List?
