Jobs in Hong Kong for British Citizens 2027: Visas, Tax & Pay

British citizens need a work visa to take a job in Hong Kong. Most come on a GEP employment visa sponsored by their employer (HK$600 application fee plus HK$1,300 for the visa, about four weeks), while graduates of top universities can apply for TTPS without a job offer, and 18 to 30 year olds can use the Working Holiday Scheme, which has 1,000 places a year for UK nationals and needs HK$22,000 in funds. The UK and Hong Kong have a double taxation agreement in force since 2010. Be aware that from 6 April 2026 you can no longer pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance from abroad, and Class 3 now needs 10 years of previous UK residence or contributions.

This guide covers visa routes for UK nationals, the working holiday, recognised UK qualifications, tax and National Insurance, MPF, pay in pounds and how to find work. It is the UK companion to our guide to jobs in Hong Kong for Americans.

Can British Citizens Work in Hong Kong?

Yes, but not visa-free. According to the Immigration Department, British citizens can visit Hong Kong for up to 180 days without a visa, but visitors are not allowed to take up employment, paid or unpaid. To work, you need permission from the Immigration Department before you start.

The good news is that UK nationals face no extra restrictions. The routes are the same as for any foreign professional, and British degrees, legal and accounting qualifications are widely recognised. English is the working language in most multinational offices.

GEP: the standard route

The General Employment Policy visa is how most British professionals arrive. Your employer sponsors you, you need a relevant degree or equivalent experience, and the job must pay at market level. The Immigration Department says processing normally takes four weeks. Since 26 February 2025 the fee is HK$600 to apply plus HK$1,300 for the visa. Our GEP visa guide covers documents in detail.

TTPS: if you went to a top university

Many British graduates qualify for the Top Talent Pass Scheme without realising it. Category B covers graduates of eligible top-ranked universities with three years' work experience in the past five, and Category C covers recent graduates of those universities, subject to a quota. Several UK universities are on the eligible list. TTPS is not tied to an employer, which makes job hunting in Hong Kong much easier. See our TTPS guide.

The Hong Kong Working Holiday Scheme for UK Nationals

If you are 18 to 30, this is the easiest way to try Hong Kong. According to the Immigration Department, the scheme for UK nationals works like this:

  • Quota: 1,000 places a year, approved on a first-come, first-served basis (no ballot for UK applicants).
  • Stay: up to 12 months, and extensions are not normally granted.
  • Work: temporary work incidental to your holiday, with no limit per employer, up to 12 months in total.
  • Study: allowed, up to 12 months in total.
  • Funds: at least HK$22,000, plus a return ticket or the money to buy one.
  • Insurance: medical and hospital insurance for the whole stay.
  • Eligibility: a valid UK passport, ordinary residence in the UK, no dependants travelling with you, and you can only take part once.

Apply online through the Immigration Department's Working Holiday Scheme page. Our working holiday visa guide covers the jobs people actually get on it.

Don't confuse it with the reverse scheme for Hong Kong passport holders going to the UK, which runs a ballot. Many search results mix the two up.

Are UK Qualifications Recognised in Hong Kong?

Mostly, yes, and some have direct routes.

Solicitors

Solicitors qualified in England and Wales can requalify in Hong Kong through the Law Society of Hong Kong's Overseas Lawyers Qualification Examination (OLQE). The 2026 exam has six heads: conveyancing, civil and criminal procedure, commercial and company law, accounts and professional conduct, principles of common law, and Hong Kong constitutional law. Exemptions are available for some heads. Many UK lawyers first work as registered foreign lawyers. Our foreign lawyer guide explains both routes.

Accountants

HKICPA has a reciprocal membership agreement with ICAEW and ICAS (along with CA ANZ, CAI and SAICA) under the Global Accounting Alliance, giving full mutual recognition of exams and practical experience. HKICPA extended it in November 2023 for five years, to 30 November 2028. ACCA members have a separate route. See our accounting jobs guide.

Teachers

The Education Bureau's Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Scheme accepts UK teachers with a relevant degree, a PGCE or equivalent teacher training in English, and a TEFL or TESL certificate. For 2026/27 primary NET posts, the EDB lists a salary range of HK$35,080 to HK$67,850 a month, plus a special allowance of HK$20,989 a month for overseas appointees and a gratuity of 10% to 15%. International schools hire separately and often prefer UK-trained teachers for British curriculum schools.

Do You Pay UK Tax If You Work in Hong Kong?

Usually not on your Hong Kong salary, once you are non-resident in the UK. Under the UK Statutory Residence Test, people who leave to work full-time abroad generally become non-resident, and Hong Kong then taxes the salary. Hong Kong's salaries tax is capped at 15% on the first HK$5 million of net income and 16% above that, according to the Inland Revenue Department, and you pay the lower of that or the progressive rates.

The UK and Hong Kong have a comprehensive double taxation agreement, signed on 21 June 2010 and in force since 20 December 2010, according to the Inland Revenue Department. It applies in Hong Kong from the 2011/12 year of assessment and helps if you keep UK rental income or work in both places.

National Insurance: The April 2026 Change

This is the biggest change for British expats in years, and most guides haven't caught up.

According to GOV.UK, from the 2026/27 tax year:

  • Voluntary Class 2 contributions for time abroad are no longer allowed. Class 2 was the cheap way to keep building your UK State Pension while working overseas.
  • Class 3 for periods abroad after 5 April 2026 now needs 10 consecutive years of previous UK residence, or 10 years of qualifying contributions. It used to be three years.
  • Class 3 costs £18.40 a week in 2026/27.

There is a transitional rule. If you applied to pay for 2024/25 or 2025/26 on or before 5 April 2026, you can keep the old three-year rules as long as you pay by 5 April 2027 and apply for 2026/27 by the same date. Those rules end when you return to the UK.

If you are moving now and have fewer than 10 years in the UK, you may not be able to fill gaps from Hong Kong at all. Check your National Insurance record before you go, and decide whether to pay any missing years first.

Do British Citizens Have to Pay MPF?

Usually yes, after a short exemption. The MPFA says people entering Hong Kong for employment are exempt for their first 13 months, or if they are members of a retirement scheme outside Hong Kong. After 13 months on an employment visa, your employer must enrol you within 60 days.

Contributions are 5% from you and 5% from your employer, on relevant income between HK$7,100 and HK$30,000 a month, so the most you pay is HK$1,500 a month. When you leave Hong Kong for good, you can withdraw your MPF on the ground of permanent departure, but only once in your lifetime. Our MPF guide explains both sides.

What Is a Good Salary in Hong Kong in Pounds?

At around HK$10.46 to the pound (October 2026 interbank rate, per OFX), these are useful reference points:

Monthly salaryRoughly in GBP a monthRoughly in GBP a year
HK$21,200 (median wage)£2,000£24,300
HK$40,000£3,800£45,900
HK$60,000£5,700£68,800
HK$80,000£7,600£91,800
HK$120,000£11,500£137,700

Source: Census and Statistics Department median monthly wage (May to June 2025); conversions at HK$10.46 per GBP, rounded.

The headline numbers look good against UK pay after Hong Kong's low tax, but rent takes a much larger share of income than most Britons expect. Our guide to what counts as a good salary in Hong Kong works through real budgets.

Morgan McKinley's 2026 outlook expects salary budgets of about 4% for people who stay, and increases of 10% to 15% for people who change jobs, with more for AI, data, cybersecurity and finance transformation skills.

Which Industries Hire British Professionals?

British candidates are most in demand in:

  • Financial services: banking, asset management, insurance, compliance and risk.
  • Legal: international law firms and in-house legal teams.
  • Accounting and audit: Big Four and in-house finance, helped by the ICAEW recognition.
  • Education: international schools and the NET Scheme.
  • Technology: software engineering, cybersecurity and data.
  • Professional services: consulting, architecture, surveying and engineering.

Practical Tips for British Job Seekers

  • Time zones. Hong Kong is eight hours ahead of the UK in winter (GMT) and seven hours ahead during British Summer Time, with no daylight saving in Hong Kong. Book interviews for your morning, their afternoon.
  • CV format. Two pages, no photo needed, with a short profile at the top.
  • Notice periods. Hong Kong employers are used to long UK notice periods for senior hires but will often push for an earlier start.
  • Mandarin helps more than Cantonese in finance and anything China-facing.
  • BN(O). The British National (Overseas) route is for Hong Kong people moving to the UK, not the other way, so it doesn't apply to UK-born British citizens.
