International School Jobs in Hong Kong 2027: Pay, Visa & Hiring
Kenji Farre, Director · Oct 9, 2026 · 7 min read

Hong Kong has 52 international schools teaching about 44,700 students, and most of them recruit teachers between mid-October and January for an August start. You'll need a degree plus a teaching qualification (PGCE, PGDE, B.Ed or equivalent to UK QTS) and usually two or more years of experience. ESF, the largest group, publishes a pay scale of HK$506,040 to HK$885,420 a year plus an HK$8,050 monthly housing allowance and a 20% contract gratuity, and schools sponsor the employment visa for overseas hires.
This guide covers the hiring calendar, the main schools and their curricula, pay and packages, visa and teacher registration, and how to get hired from overseas. If you're looking for English teaching roles that don't need a teaching licence, such as the NET Scheme or tutoring, see our teaching English in Hong Kong guide instead.
How Many International Schools Are There in Hong Kong?
According to the Education Bureau, there are 52 international schools in Hong Kong in 2025/26: 16 primary, 7 secondary, 28 through-train (primary and secondary) and 1 special school. Together they offer 48,413 places and enrol 44,745 students, of whom 66.2% are non-local.
On top of those 52, the English Schools Foundation (ESF) runs its own network of English-medium schools, and there are dozens of private independent and bilingual schools hiring native English-speaking teachers. The market is big enough that a qualified, experienced teacher can usually find a role, but the best schools are competitive.

When Do International Schools in Hong Kong Hire?
The main hiring season runs from mid-October to January for positions starting the following August. Schools like to have contracts signed early in the new year, once their own departing teachers have confirmed they're leaving.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| August to September | Leadership and head of department roles are posted for the following year |
| Mid-October | First teaching posts go live, CDNIS among the earliest |
| November | First big wave of adverts, including Kellett |
| January | Search Associates Hong Kong fair and Kellett's second round |
| February to May | Second-round vacancies as late resignations come in |
| June to August | Last-minute roles, teaching assistants and substitute teachers, usually for people already in Hong Kong |
CDNIS says it starts recruiting as early as mid-October for the following August, and Kellett advertises in November and January. The Search Associates Hong Kong fair in 2026 ran 16 to 18 January with 52 schools and more than 400 vacancies.
The practical advice: have your CV, references and documents ready by early October. Schools often hire the first strong candidate rather than waiting for the deadline, and CDNIS says as much in its own guidance.
Which International Schools Hire Foreign Teachers?
Almost all of them. Here are the main employers by curriculum.
| School or group | Curriculum | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| English Schools Foundation (ESF) | English National Curriculum and IB | The biggest English-medium employer, with schools across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories |
| Hong Kong International School (HKIS) | American | Large Tai Tam and Repulse Bay campuses; prefers five or more years' experience |
| Canadian International School (CDNIS) | Canadian and IB | Uses Search Associates and Tes-Schrole; hiring starts mid-October |
| Kellett School | British | Around 300 staff across Pok Fu Lam and Kowloon Bay; wants QTS-equivalent teachers |
| Harrow International School Hong Kong | British, boarding | Tuen Mun campus with boarding houses |
| Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong | British, primary | Tseung Kwan O |
| Hong Kong Academy (HKA) | IB | Hires mainly through Search Associates fairs |
| Chinese International School (CIS) | IB, bilingual | Mandarin-English programme; English teachers are still hired |
| French International School (FIS) | French and IB | Separate English-language stream |
| German Swiss International School (GSIS) | German and British | English stream hires UK-trained teachers |
| Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK) | Australian and IB | Kowloon Tong |
| Nord Anglia, Stamford American, Discovery Bay International | Mixed | Newer or mid-sized schools with regular vacancies |
Most of these post on their own careers pages first, then on Tes and Schrole. Hong Kong Academy says it primarily uses Search Associates and hires most teachers through international recruitment fairs.
What Qualifications Do You Need to Teach at an International School?
The standard bar is a degree, a recognised teaching qualification and some classroom experience.
- A bachelor's degree. In any subject if you have a PGCE or PGDE, or a Bachelor of Education.
- A teaching qualification. ESF asks for a B.Ed or a degree with a PGCE, or equivalent. Kellett wants qualifications equivalent to UK QTS.
- Experience. ESF looks for one to three years, CDNIS asks for at least two years in an accredited school, and HKIS has preferred five or more years for full-time posts.
- Clean background checks. Expect a police check from your home country and, once you have a Hong Kong ID, a Sexual Conviction Record Check.
- Curriculum fit. IB, IGCSE, A Level or AP experience matters more than most applicants think. Match your applications to schools that teach what you've taught.
Do You Need to Register as a Teacher in Hong Kong?
Yes. Under the Education Ordinance, anyone who teaches in a school has to be a registered teacher or a permitted teacher. If your qualifications are from overseas, the Education Bureau asks for an assessment report from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ).
Your school's HR team usually manages the paperwork, but the assessment can take time, so get certified copies of your degree and teaching certificate ready as soon as you accept an offer.
How Much Do International School Teachers Earn in Hong Kong?
Pay is good by global standards, and the package often matters more than the salary.
ESF is the only major group that publishes its terms. For 2022/23, the ESF teacher package was:
| Item | ESF teacher terms (2022/23) |
|---|---|
| Salary scale | HK$506,040 to HK$885,420 a year, across 15 points |
| Housing allowance | HK$8,050 a month |
| Contract gratuity | 20% of gross salary earned over the contract |
| Children's school fees | 80% remission for up to three children at ESF |
| Relocation | One-way economy flights to Hong Kong and 14 nights in a hotel |
| Medical and dental | Covers you, your spouse and up to three children |
| Contract length | Usually two years |
ESF's figures are a few years old, so expect current numbers to be somewhat higher. Private international schools vary widely: some pay more than ESF with full housing, others pay less and skip the gratuity. Ask about all of the following before you sign:
- Base salary and where you start on the scale
- Housing: cash allowance, reimbursement, or school-provided flat
- Gratuity or retirement top-up on top of MPF
- Annual flights home
- Tuition remission for your children
- Medical cover for dependants
- Contract length and early-exit penalties
For context against the rest of the market, see our average salary in Hong Kong guide.
Why the Housing Structure Affects Your Tax
How a school pays for your housing changes your tax bill. A cash housing allowance is taxed in full like salary. But if the school reimburses rent under proper controls, the Inland Revenue Department treats it as if the employer provided the flat, and you're taxed on a "rental value" of 10% of your income instead of the actual rent.
Here's the difference for a teacher on HK$600,000 a year with HK$96,600 of housing support (HK$8,050 a month):
| Housing arrangement | Taxable income | Estimated salaries tax |
|---|---|---|
| Cash allowance | HK$696,600 | About HK$72,700 |
| Rent reimbursement under employer control | HK$660,000 | About HK$66,500 |
That's roughly HK$6,200 a year back in your pocket for the same money. These estimates use the 2026/27 basic allowance of HK$145,000 and the maximum MPF deduction, for a single person with no other deductions.
Do International Schools Sponsor Visas?
Yes. International schools routinely sponsor employment visas under the General Employment Policy. ESF confirms it sponsors employment visas for its one and two-year teaching contracts, and sponsors dependant visas for lawfully married spouses.
Your partner can then work in Hong Kong on the dependant visa without a separate permit. That matters, because "trailing partners" of teachers often pick up teaching assistant, admin or private-sector roles. See our dependant visa guide and our GEP visa guide for the details.
Teaching Assistant and Support Jobs
Not a qualified teacher? International schools also hire teaching assistants, learning support assistants, librarians, sports coaches, admissions staff and IT support.
The catch is the visa. Schools rarely sponsor visas for these roles, and Hong Kong Academy, for example, asks substitute teachers for a Hong Kong ID and a valid visa. These jobs suit people already in Hong Kong on a dependant visa, IANG, TTPS or a working holiday visa. They're also a common way into a school before training as a teacher.
How to Get Hired From Overseas
- Register on the platforms schools use. Tes, Schrole and Search Associates cover most international schools here. Create your profile in September.
- Line up three current references. At least one should be your current head or principal. Schools contact them early, sometimes before interviews.
- Tailor your CV to the curriculum. List IB, IGCSE or AP courses taught and exam results. International school CVs commonly include a professional photo.
- Apply in the first week a post goes live. Hiring is rolling and good posts close early.
- Prepare for video interviews. Most first rounds happen online. You may also be asked to teach a demo lesson by video.
- Consider the January fair. If you're flexible, the Search Associates Hong Kong fair lets you meet dozens of schools in three days.
- Plan your registration and visa early. After you sign, expect the visa to take about four weeks and teacher registration to run in parallel.

Is Teaching at an International School in Hong Kong Worth It?
For most qualified teachers, yes. Salaries are well above the UK and competitive with Australia and Canada once you factor in housing and gratuity, tax is low, and the student body is motivated. The trade-offs are rent, which can swallow a large share of a teacher's pay without a good housing package, and long hours at the most academic schools.
Before you accept, look up flats near the campus. Hong Kong schools are spread out, and a school in Tai Tam, Tuen Mun or Discovery Bay shapes where you can sensibly live. Our rent and neighbourhoods guide covers prices by area.
