Jobs in Hong Kong for Indians 2027: Visas, Salary in Rupees & Tax

Indians can work in Hong Kong, but not on the 14-day pre-arrival registration used for visits. Most Indian professionals need an employer-sponsored General Employment Policy (GEP) visa, which takes about 4 weeks and costs HK$600 to apply plus HK$1,300 on approval. No Indian university is on the 200-institution Top Talent Pass list, so an IIT or IIM degree alone does not get you a TTPS visa. A salary of HK$50,000 a month is about INR 6 lakh a month gross at the OFX rate of 12.016 rupees per Hong Kong dollar on 19 October 2026.

This guide covers how to get a job in Hong Kong from India: the visa routes open to Indian passport holders, what they cost, which industries hire Indians, what Hong Kong salaries look like in rupees after tax, the India and Hong Kong tax treaty, and the Indian community you will land in. If you hold a US passport instead, see our guide to jobs in Hong Kong for Americans.

Can Indians Get Jobs in Hong Kong?

Yes. Hong Kong has no nationality quota for Indians, and Indian nationals are eligible for every main talent and employment scheme. The GEP excludes only nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba and North Korea.

The Indian community is long-established. The 2021 Population Census counted 42,569 people who identify as Indian, and the Consulate General of India estimates about 44,140 Indian nationals and people of Indian origin, about 32,790 of them on Indian passports. The Consulate names banking and finance, IT, shipping and the service industry as the main sectors.

The hard part is not your passport but the GEP test: the employer must show the role cannot readily be filled locally and that you are paid at market rates. That favours mid-career specialists.

If you want to start looking now, browse English-speaking roles on ExpatJobBoard.com. We list jobs in finance, tech and other sectors that don't require Cantonese.

Do Indians Need a Visa for Hong Kong?

For a short visit, no visa, but you must register. Indian nationals have to complete the free online Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) before travelling. It allows visits of up to 14 days, stays valid for 6 months (or until your passport expires, if sooner) and covers multiple trips. Your passport needs at least 6 months' validity.

The Indian Consulate has warned that the PAR details must match your passport exactly and advises carrying a printed A4 copy.

For work, yes, you need a visa. ImmD is explicit that visitors on PAR may not take any employment, paid or unpaid, start or join a business, or study. So you can fly in to meet people, but you cannot start a job, do a paid trial week or freelance for a Hong Kong client while you are here as a visitor.

Which Hong Kong Work Visa Can an Indian Get?

There are four realistic routes. For most readers it comes down to GEP (you have an offer) or IANG (you studied in Hong Kong).

RouteJob offer needed?Key requirementInitial stayProcessingRealistic for Indians?
GEP (employment visa)YesDegree in a relevant field, role locals cannot readily fill, market payUp to 36 monthsAbout 4 weeksYes, the main route

IANGNo (fresh grads)Full-time degree from a Hong Kong university24 monthsAbout 2 weeksYes, if you study in Hong Kong first

Sources: ImmD GEP, ImmD TTPS, ImmD QMAS, ImmD IANG.

GEP: the employer-sponsored route

The GEP needs a confirmed offer, normally a first degree in a relevant field, and pay broadly in line with the market. The initial stay is up to 36 months or the length of your contract, then extensions follow a 3 then 2 year pattern. Our GEP visa guide walks through the documents.

On degree recognition, ImmD asks for a "first degree in a relevant field" and assesses each case. The real question is usually whether the role and pay justify hiring from abroad.

QMAS: the points-based route

The Quality Migrant Admission Scheme needs no job offer. You must be 18 or over, normally hold a degree, show good character and be able to support yourself, then score under the General Points Test or the Achievement-based Points Test. Treat it as a parallel bet rather than plan A.

IANG: study first, then stay

If you are open to a master's at HKU, HKUST, CUHK or another local university, the IANG visa is the easiest work visa in Hong Kong. Fresh graduates who apply within 6 months of finishing need no job offer, get 24 months and wait about 2 weeks. For many Indians in their twenties this beats trying to land a GEP offer from Pune.

Does My Indian Degree Qualify for the Top Talent Pass Scheme?

No, not on its own. This is the single most misunderstood point in Indian forums and blogs.

The Top Talent Pass Scheme Categories B and C require a degree from an eligible university. The list grew to 200 institutions from 1 January 2026, but the official institution list covers 32 countries and regions and includes no Indian institution. No IIT, no IISc, no IIM, no Delhi University.

What this means in practice:

  • IIT BTech only: not eligible for TTPS B or C. Look at GEP or QMAS.
  • IIT BTech plus a master's from a listed university (say Imperial, NUS or Carnegie Mellon): eligible under B or C on the strength of the master's.
  • Any degree plus HK$2.5 million a year in income: eligible under Category A, which has no university test.

Our TTPS guide explains each category and how the list works.

How Long Does a Hong Kong Work Visa Take and What Does It Cost?

ImmD quotes about 4 weeks for a first GEP application and 2 to 3 weeks for an extension, counted from when it has all documents and the fee. Plan on 6 to 8 weeks from signed offer to start date once you add document collection and courier time.

Since 26 February 2025, the fees for GEP, TTPS, QMAS and IANG are the same, and they are charged per person, dependants included.

FeeAmountApprox. in INR at 12.016
Application fee (non-refundable)HK$600INR 7,210
Visa issuance fee, stay over 180 daysHK$1,300INR 15,621
Visa issuance fee, stay of 180 days or lessHK$600INR 7,210
Principal plus spouse, both on 3-year visasHK$3,800INR 45,661

Sources: ImmD Specified Schemes fees, OFX HKD to INR, 19 October 2026.

Most multinational employers pay these fees. Smaller firms sometimes ask you to, so raise it at offer stage.

Which Industries in Hong Kong Hire Indians?

The Consulate lists banking and finance, IT, shipping and services as the main sectors, and that matches what we see on the board:

  • Banking and finance: risk, compliance, middle office, quant and technology roles in global banks. The Consulate notes 5 public-sector and 2 private-sector Indian banks operate here too.
  • Technology: data engineering, cloud, cybersecurity and development leads. Our software engineer jobs guide has the detail.
  • Trading, shipping and logistics: India and Hong Kong trade was US$28.17 billion in FY2022 to 23, and many Indian family trading houses have been here for generations.

My honest view: if you are a mid-level Java developer with no niche, a GEP case is hard because the local talent pool already covers you. If you are a payments specialist, a cloud security lead or a risk modeller with regional experience, you have a real case.

What Is a Hong Kong Salary in Rupees?

Hong Kong salaries look huge in rupees, but you have to compare them with Hong Kong costs, not Indian ones. For context, the median monthly wage for all employees was HK$21,200 in May to June 2025, with the 90th percentile at HK$51,300.

All conversions below use the OFX interbank rate of 1 HKD = 12.016 INR on 19 October 2026. Bank and remittance rates will be a little lower.

How Much Tax Will I Pay in Hong Kong?

Much less than in India at the same salary. Hong Kong salaries tax is charged at 2%, 6%, 10% and 14% on each HK$50,000 slice of net chargeable income, then 17% on the rest, or a standard rate of 15% on net income if that is lower. From 2026/27 the basic allowance is HK$145,000 and the married person's allowance is HK$290,000.

You also pay into the MPF pension: 5% of your salary, capped at HK$1,500 a month, with your employer matching it.

This table is my own calculation for a single person in 2026/27 with only the basic allowance and the MPF deduction, using the IRD 2026/27 rates and the OFX rate of 12.016.

Monthly salaryAnnual taxEffective tax rateTake-home per month (after tax and MPF)Take-home per month in INR

Sources: calculation based on IRD 2026/27 tax computation examples, MPFA mandatory contributions and OFX HKD to INR, 19 October 2026.

So HK$50,000 a month is about INR 72 lakh a year gross and about INR 63 lakh after Hong Kong tax and MPF. Rent is the catch, which I cover below. There is more detail in our Hong Kong salaries tax guide.

Is there a double taxation agreement between India and Hong Kong?

Yes. India and Hong Kong signed a comprehensive double taxation agreement on 19 March 2018. It entered into force on 30 November 2018 and has applied in both places from 1 April 2019.

Under the employment income article, salary is normally taxed where the work is done, with the usual 183-day short-stay exception. The treaty also caps withholding on dividends at 5% and on interest at 10%.

Whether India taxes you at all depends on your Indian residential status, which turns on how many days you spend in India. Talk to a chartered accountant before your first financial year abroad, especially about NRI status, your Indian bank accounts and any rental income at home.

Is Hong Kong Expensive Compared with Mumbai or Bangalore?

Very. Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey ranked Hong Kong the most expensive city in the world for international employees, while Mumbai, India's costliest city, came 136th.

Rent is the big line. A one-bedroom flat in a central area will eat a large share of a HK$30,000 salary, which is why many Indian families live further out in places like Tsuen Wan, Tung Chung or the New Territories, or share. Transport and eating out at local places are where you claw some of it back: the MTR is cheap and efficient, and a cha chaan teng lunch costs far less than anything in Central.

My rule of thumb: below HK$30,000 a month as a single person you will live modestly and save little. From HK$50,000 you can rent a decent flat and still send money home. For a family with school fees, think HK$80,000 or more unless your employer pays a housing allowance.

How Big Is the Indian Community in Hong Kong?

Bigger and older than most newcomers expect. Indians are one of the largest non-Chinese groups: the 2021 Census figure of 42,569 compares with 24,385 Pakistanis and 29,701 Nepalese. The Consulate says the largest groups are Sindhis, Gujaratis and Punjabi Sikhs, and there are more than 40 Indian associations.

New figures are coming: the 2026 Population Census runs to the end of 2026, with summary results due in August 2027.

Day to day, you will find Indian groceries and restaurants across Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai, Hindu and Sikh places of worship, and Diwali and Holi events run by community groups. The community is a real help in your first months, socially and for leads on flats and jobs.

How to Get a Job in Hong Kong from India: Step by Step

  1. Pick your visa route first. Check whether you qualify for IANG, TTPS (listed degree or HK$2.5 million income) or QMAS. If not, you are on GEP and need an employer.
  2. Target employers who sponsor. Global banks, insurers, Big Four firms, tech companies and regional headquarters sponsor GEP visas routinely. Indian banks and trading houses with Hong Kong offices are worth a look too.
  3. Rewrite your CV for Hong Kong. Two pages, achievements in numbers, salary in HK$ or US$ not lakhs, and no photo or date of birth needed.
  4. Apply from India and interview remotely. First rounds are almost always on video. If you fly in for final rounds, register PAR and remember you cannot work on it.
  5. Negotiate the package in HK$. Ask about the housing allowance, relocation, flights, health insurance for dependants and whether the employer pays visa fees.
  6. Let the employer file the GEP. You provide degree certificates, experience letters and passport copies; they provide the business case. Expect about 4 weeks after ImmD has everything.
  7. Land, get your HKID and set up. Register for your Hong Kong identity card, open a bank account and join your employer's MPF scheme.

A word on "consultants" who promise a Hong Kong job for a fee: the GEP only works with a genuine employer who sponsors you. Nobody can sell you a work visa. If someone asks for money to guarantee a job, walk away.

Can My Family Come with Me?

Yes, and this is a big plus for Hong Kong. A GEP holder can bring a spouse or civil partner and unmarried children under 18, and dependants are allowed to work or study. Your spouse does not need their own employer sponsor.

Each dependant pays the same HK$600 plus HK$1,300 in fees. Our dependant visa guide covers the paperwork.

Do I Need to Speak Cantonese?

Not for most professional roles in banks, multinationals and tech firms, where English is the working language. Mandarin is a real advantage for China-facing roles, and Cantonese helps in local SMEs and retail.

FAQs: Jobs in Hong Kong for Indians

Can I enter Hong Kong on pre-arrival registration and look for a job?

You can visit for up to 14 days on PAR and meet people, but you cannot take any employment, paid or unpaid. Your employer must secure a work visa before you start. Most hiring for Indian candidates happens remotely anyway.

Is the Hong Kong pre-arrival registration free?

Yes. PAR is free, valid for 6 months or until your passport expires, and covers multiple visits of up to 14 days each. Make sure the details match your passport exactly.

Are IIT or IIM degrees eligible for the Top Talent Pass Scheme?

No. The 2026 eligible-institution list has 200 universities and none are in India. You can still qualify under Category A with HK$2.5 million in annual income, or under B or C with a degree from a listed overseas university.

How much does a Hong Kong work visa cost for an Indian?

The fees are HK$600 to apply and HK$1,300 on approval for a stay of more than 180 days, so HK$1,900 per person. That is about INR 22,800 at the 19 October 2026 rate. Many employers cover it.

How long does a GEP work visa take?

ImmD says about 4 weeks for a first application once it has all documents and the fee. Allow 6 to 8 weeks from offer to start date in total.

What is a good salary in Hong Kong for an Indian professional?

For a single professional, HK$40,000 to HK$60,000 a month is comfortable and leaves room to save. The official median is HK$21,200, but that includes many local and part-time roles that are not open to visa sponsorship.

What is HK$50,000 a month in Indian rupees?

At 12.016 rupees per Hong Kong dollar (OFX, 19 October 2026), HK$50,000 is about INR 6 lakh a month or INR 72 lakh a year gross. After 2026/27 Hong Kong tax and MPF you keep about HK$43,800 a month, roughly INR 5.26 lakh.

Is there a double taxation agreement between India and Hong Kong?

Yes. A comprehensive DTA has applied since 1 April 2019. Employment income is generally taxed where you work, but your Indian tax position depends on your residential status, so check with a CA.

Can my spouse work in Hong Kong on a dependant visa?

Yes. Dependants of GEP visa holders may take up employment without a separate sponsor. That makes Hong Kong easier for dual-career couples than many other destinations.

How many Indians live in Hong Kong?

The 2021 Census counted 42,569 people identifying as Indian, and the Consulate estimates about 44,140 Indian nationals and people of Indian origin. Fresh census results are due in August 2027.

Can I work in Hong Kong after studying there?

Yes. Graduates of full-time degree programmes in Hong Kong can apply for IANG within 6 months of graduating with no job offer, and get 24 months to work or look for work.
